Moleskine was started by Italian (Milan) publisher, Modo & Modo, in 1997. The intent was to bring a notebook style used by several prominent artists and thinkers back into production. They established the Moleskine® trademark. In January 2007, Moleskine S.r.l. acquired the worldwide trademark rights. In April 2013, Moleskine S.r.l. was listed on the Borsa Italiana (Italian Stock Exchange). In October 2016, Moleskine S.r.l. was acquired by the Belgian group, D'Ieteren. As a result, it was delisted on the Borsa Italiana, but the Moleskine Group includes Moleskine America, Inc. (established in 2008), Moleskine Asia Ltd (2011), which is entirely controlling Moleskine Shanghai and Moleskine Singapore, Moleskine France (2013) and Moleskine Germany (2013). All subsidiaries are wholly-owned.

Moleskine employs about 400 with a broader network of partners and consultants. Its home office is in Milan, Italy (Milano, Moleskine S.r.l., viale Piceno 17)
