A stub grind is a form of custom grind that produces a thick down-stroke, a thin cross-stroke, and is relatively smooth to write with. It's commonly offered on new pens with down-stroke widths of 1.1mm, 1.5mm, and 1.9mm. It is sometimes available in narrower widths. A nibmeister can grind nearly any nib into a stub nib, so if you want a narrower down-stroke than 1.1mm, inquire with a nibmeister about whether your nib is a good candidate for a stub nib.

An italic grind is related to a stub grind, but the edges of an italic grind are sharper, giving it a thinner cross-stroke, but at the expense of being less smooth to write with.

In between the smoothness of a stub grind and the sharpness of an italic grind are the cursive italic grind and stub-italic-gradient grind (a proprietary grind by Franklin-Christoph).
