Question[edit]

hi Brad hope all is well. Got an EDC related as to be a question for you that's just a bit longer than a tweet. I'm realizing that my daily carry pretty much falls into two categories business Dave mode and dad Dave mode and business Dave mode I usually stick to atop a mountain briefcase daypack are not going near with my laptop in a four member sign pad Nemo sign pad for dad Dave mode by Tom been copilot stays loaded up with wet wipes extra kid close a water bottle and snacks. Then there's the overlapping part. Of the van diagram. I'm constantly moving my live. Field notes books pens phone man's USB drive and flashlight. Back and forth between those two bags need a recommendation for a small well made pouch with pockets that can hold these common items I'd like to be able to swap it between two main bags or just carry it solo when the bigger bag stay home keep up the great podcasting thanks Dave

Answer[edit]

so Dave needs a baguette a bag favorite bag and bad time.
Speaker 1: So that was literally the first thing I thought of right the lid lab tough a bag in bag in the a five size not the A. for big boys size a five size as a nice middle pouch it's got.
Speaker 0: Like a phone holder I can hold a few pans it'll hold your field notes older flashlight.
Speaker 1: It's kind of everything and it's reasonably cheap it's like thirteen box I mean that's kind of where I went with this but there are a couple of other options actually hit lab mix of a few other options will put a link in the shed it's them I haven't use those but the bag and the bag is really good quality.
Speaker 0: You know the a four.
Speaker 1: Kind of.
Speaker 0: Gave us the idea for the Lanier kind of made our own.
Speaker 1: Bags to the A. five smaller size.
Speaker 0: Is your good portable.
Speaker 1: Move it from Baghdad bag bag.
Speaker 0: So.
Speaker 1: I really like that.
Speaker 0: The Tom been travel Keeble it seems like it's a pretty good idea it's.
Speaker 1: It's not.
Speaker 0: It's more built out than a standard packing cube it even has a shoulder strap if you need I think it's a little bit overkill for a bag that small but it has all the internal pockets in storage plus the size to be able to move from the top of mountain briefcase up into your other bags.
Speaker 0: The only other one I thought of which you probably don't need it's too big but this would.
Speaker 1: This would not be a bag in a bag.
Speaker 1: But the Tom been medium cafe bag.
Speaker 0: Would hold all those things but it's a standalone bag with a bigger strap.
Speaker 0: But I think your your options are the.
Speaker 1: Live hit lab a five tougher.
Speaker 0: Or maybe the Tom band travel Q. blitz sincerity atop an fan Dave that might be a good option so.
Speaker 1: That's.
Speaker 0: That's my question or my answer there so we'll a we'll keep going that that's a an accessory category small bag that there's a billion different answers for so if you have any other answers definitely let us know.
Speaker 0: To tweet was Dan from earlier in the show you know to stand.
Speaker 1: Are you still using.
Speaker 0: The skeptics mixture so I a for a while was.
Speaker 1: Doing a mix.
Speaker 0: Of wrong cleaner.
Speaker 0: Say licks and roaring cleaner scabiosa a one to one mixture using into my pens I haven't been using it recently but it's only because I'm the sample vial I made like my for middle leaders I used it all up.
Speaker 0: And I just haven't mixed up any any more of it it was an awesome color something I really really like to use.
Speaker 1: But.
Speaker 0: It's not anything I've used recently but I totally recommend doing it if you have those two aches.
Speaker 1: They behave.
Speaker 0: Wonderfully in the color comes out.
Speaker 1: Up perfectly I think it's an awesome.
Speaker 0: Awesome color.
Speaker 0: So to Rojo once you know I love my eight twenty three as it so phenomenal to write with what but when filling it I feel as though I have to really push hard on the part plunger much harder than it appears you're you do in your video is that normal so I did a just like one of those quick little Instagram videos where I.
Speaker 0: But the eight twenty three in an impartial.
Speaker 1: And.
Speaker 0: Drop the plunger.
Speaker 1: To fill it up.
Speaker 0: You have to use some force like I had to before I start feeling that add to make sure my hands were in the right place to apply the right.
Speaker 1: Amount.
Speaker 0: Of force.
Speaker 1: To the pen.
Speaker 1: And.
Speaker 0: To be able to.
Speaker 1: Like Philip.
Speaker 0: It's it makes a big snap at the end so you know I'm pushing it pretty hard but I don't know if it's harder or softer than yours you know I.
Speaker 0: I don't know any other eight twenty three people.
Speaker 1: You know have any issue with that maybe if you filled it a bunch it could be that the the FAQ filling.
Speaker 0: Our.
Speaker 0: The the plunger part of it.
Speaker 1: Might need to be.
Speaker 0: Lubricated with silicone grease I've had to do that and twist with a twist before.
Speaker 0: On of fact filler on the back many or on that just really on the piston filler many.
Speaker 1: After at.
Speaker 0: Certain point it started grabbing a lot more.
Speaker 0: So you know I I don't know what to say you have to push mine pretty hard and I had to add to gear up to do that.
Speaker 0: All right next up.
Speaker 1: We have I Eric.
Speaker 0: What are some good inks for absorbent paper I'd like to use fountain pens at work but some of the extra funds are still a bit too wet causing bleed through so this is the traditional copy paper at work question out when he's fountain pens.
Speaker 0: There's no perfect answer.
Speaker 0: You know the even the that cheap paper hit fairies.
Speaker 0: You can look at the dealers Bernanke series the quick drying stuff the dealers expeditor which kind of.
Speaker 0: Is made to work around these things but you're kind of stuck with blue and black.
Speaker 0: You know there's no great colors necessarily to to have for that.
Speaker 1: I find.
Speaker 1: That basic.
Speaker 1: Company inks like.
Speaker 0: The lami basic colors or the pilot basic colors.
Speaker 0: Tend to work okay they're not the best.
Speaker 0: But.
Speaker 1: In pelican.
Speaker 0: Another is another one the dryer.
Speaker 0: Standard colors tend to work best so if you don't want to buy a specific.
Speaker 1: Fast drying.
Speaker 0: Or.
Speaker 1: Non feathering ink.
Speaker 0: That only comes in black or blue you can try.
Speaker 1: Like your basic law me.
Speaker 0: Or pelican.
Speaker 1: And maybe even pilot.
Speaker 0: Inks.
Speaker 0: For that type of paper and you still might have some issues this is not a great set up but keep playing around you'll find something that works.
Speaker 0: The daily wants to know he's heading back to DC in March wanna make it a yearly tradition to pick up a farm these exclusive pen last year was stealth gray rector fifty one what shall it be this year.
Speaker 1: I have no idea.
Speaker 0: But there's always a go but they did a cherry blossom one but two years ago that was different from the the flour one that you bought Mike.
Speaker 1: That.
Speaker 0: I really I wish I should've bought it you know was wrong cherry blossom time in DC was a farm is exclusive of super pretty high I have no idea.
Speaker 0: What they are up to for this year but their exclusive it's always extremely well done it's always one of the best looking ones of the year.
Speaker 1: And then I don't want good ideas and good executions is the typical way that the fines one's works of yeah.
Speaker 0: Yes girl also Oscar in the chat rooms and it says funnies does a cherry blossom on every year so off to take a look in and see.
Speaker 0: So they may do multiple once per year but the they're always really really beautiful really well done so.
Speaker 1: They remind me of like how nice that.
Speaker 0: I had in my see what is for.
Speaker 0: Gold but that they just it recently their wonderful.
Speaker 0: So add to bill wants to know is there such a thing as water resistant turquoise ink and there is so KWC makes an iron gall turquoise that is absolutely fabulous.
Speaker 1: I.
Speaker 0: Actually.
Speaker 1: Have some I need to.
Speaker 0: And get up.
Speaker 1: And.
Speaker 0: Use it again because it's a really great color now you're not gonna get like the pure turquoise brightness but you're gonna get a really cool color and you're going to get water resistance.
Speaker 0: There might be some other things out there that I'm not thinking of but that's.
Speaker 1: Immediately what came to mind.
Speaker 0: And it's such a good Ankit cleans well it looks great and.
Speaker 1: I'm a.
Speaker 0: I'm a huge fan.
Speaker 0: So.
Speaker 1: Don't Jimmy back to the backpacks Mike.
Speaker 0: What's the best backpack for commuting with a fifteen inch windows laptop needs to be as waterproof as possible.
Speaker 1: Thanks.
Speaker 0: So this is a hard question because you can go nuts.
Speaker 1: And.
Speaker 0: In the go nuts category always look at chrome chrome bags for what they do.
Speaker 1: They just re launched.
Speaker 0: Or.
Speaker 1: Added.
Speaker 1: A.
Speaker 1: I should say.
Speaker 0: Updated their weather proof collection which has.
Speaker 1: Tons of bags.
Speaker 0: They're very expensive so you have some trade offs depending on how waterproof you want to go.
Speaker 0: One is price.
Speaker 1: And.
Speaker 0: Second one is weight so waterproof if you want.
Speaker 1: Like.
Speaker 0: One of the big boys chrome bags that is waterproof.
Speaker 0: They're really heavy and really expensive.
Speaker 1: But.
Speaker 0: There.
Speaker 1: At the bomb proof type level of back right I mean it's a high end bag.
Speaker 0: It's very expensive it's very heavy.
Speaker 1: But.
Speaker 0: It will be to your goals.
Speaker 1: Now if you need a bag that can take getting.
Speaker 0: Wet.
Speaker 0: But not necessarily set out in the rain for hours you know the regular Tom been stuff they use they is waterproof zippers on a lot other bags you just have to check and see which ones though the nylon they use for the exterior the rain will roll off you know as long as you're not gonna let it soak for an hour it'll be fine in the zippers have the waterproof zipper tape.
Speaker 0: For it to not allow the water to get in there so that's your more moderate.
Speaker 0: Level of weather proof miss but if you want something.
Speaker 1: Like.
Speaker 0: Ultra serious intense chrome is made for that they're off their weather proof collection I've actually had one of their weather proof bags years and years and years ago I had to get rid of it because it was so heavy but it was a big awesome.
Speaker 1: Bomb proof type bag.
Speaker 0: It was fantastic arm in the end I think their designs are really great.
Speaker 0: So this next question I really wanted to tackle and I thought about holding it for a topic for another time but maybe we could just expand on it.
Speaker 0: So.
Speaker 1: Mountain of ink.
Speaker 0: Kelly does a wonderful.
Speaker 0: Job job on her blog doing interviews she says as a blogger how do you deal with internet trolls without getting discouraged.
Speaker 0: It's hard to answer that question directly other than saying you know you can't let it get to you but that's like to to easy to say right so.
Speaker 1: I found that.
Speaker 0: Just embracing the positivity of the community and brushing those people off as kind of the best way to go you know I am fortunate.
Speaker 1: To be in the situation that I'm in.
Speaker 0: Where.
Speaker 1: I am a white male.
Speaker 0: And I don't have to deal with some of the crap that you know the females or the people of color or that yeah GB T. have to deal with.
Speaker 1: The IBM being a white man and having a creative work you would typically Joss to criticize for the quality of the work that you do not like that is that the the criticism that tends to be Levita way if you are anything other than a white man.
Speaker 1: Then people are effectively.
Speaker 1: Criticizing every single aspect of your life so right yet we do come from a privileged position in that.
Speaker 1: People tend to be.
Speaker 1: Just.
Speaker 1: Sizing what we do all like anything about us tends to be very limited to evil like I don't like you or I write you know like not so much it just like horrific threats and no one of us knows are threatened me right like I don't get anything like that and I'm pretty sure it's the same for you Sir someone to say that like we can talk about this but I understand that we are coming from a position where they kind of criticisms and trolling that we get is extremely light compared to.
Speaker 1: Some of the people in the world yeah.
Speaker 0: Yes so I mean I try my best almost never respond to any of that you know I'll get called names from time to time and I'd like to literally just scroll on or delete the email and just be done with it and just.
Speaker 1: Understand that the community.
Speaker 0: As a whole.
Speaker 1: Has your back right.
Speaker 0: Like we're all in this together we all want to see the light the beauty and awesomeness of the community.
Speaker 1: And Kelly is one of my.
Speaker 0: Favorite bloggers right now if you.
Speaker 1: Can tell by.
Speaker 0: Some of the things I write about her work in refill on the weekends like I'm always fawning over her review so you know I I'm happy to to talk about this and you know we can talk about it individually talk about it off line and just know that the community is really here for everyone very support of helpful way.
Speaker 1: And that anyone who's.
Speaker 0: Only interested and causing trouble they'll be gone before you know it and hopefully you know it doesn't get too serious but yeah this is a it's a tough topic for sure and we should put and we talked about it a little bit with Aziz a.
Speaker 0: On the greatest titled podcast.
Speaker 0: In in the history of of our show teaching black lipped oyster I will never forget that I don't remember the episode number I'm thinking one ninety four but if I got all that right to be amazing go listen to that.
Speaker 1: Nineties of one week you for all of us close.
Speaker 0: Close close so listen that episode we covered this a little bit with her because I know she gets she gets a lot of hate thrown her way and it's just unfair in it it's ridiculous that the people don't have a better life than to than to be annoying on the internet so I say just another where there.
Speaker 1: To me personally.
Speaker 1: It mostly doesn't affect me for longer than the period of time the I think about it.
Speaker 1: This stuff tends not to stick a microphone too long of and the ones that do I like when there's like that nugget of truth right now the ones that kind of keeping it keep stuck in your brain.
Speaker 1: I it comes with the territory basically like if you're gonna if you're gonna tend to do something which is in public this is as possible comes along with it like is this is how it is and then just the way that you decide to deal with it is whatever works for you some people want to fight some people don't want to fight some people like me where I kind of sit in the middle way sometimes I'll fight but most of the time I want it's kinda hard to sometimes I'm sometimes all mock.
Speaker 0: It's not healthy.
Speaker 0: I tend to avoid now like zero confrontation.
Speaker 1: That's my aunts my twenty eight I understand that I totally understand that but I don't necessarily subscribe to it myself because there are times where.
Speaker 1: It's too difficult not to say something yeah.
Speaker 0: Individual cases.
Speaker 1: Fought.
Speaker 1: Basically every single time they never work out the way you want them to every time yeah yeah you're right here that it just never goes away you one.
Speaker 0: Now and then you have to think about it more so I try to get past it.
Speaker 0: But the yeah it's a great topic and something we could explore more for sure.
Speaker 0: All right last one sister T. says the first pen show of the years in the books and everyone is ready for more if you could organize European show what would you do differently what is missing that you'd have in yours so I kind of replied this was came in the selection online.
Speaker 0: Replied a little bit that the arm BYOB.
Speaker 0: Podcast talked about this a an episode or two ago.
Speaker 1: Where they basically.
Speaker 1: Related what they would like to see as a pen con.
Speaker 0: More than a pen show and that's something we've always talked about like what would be the perfect set up and it would be more convention style with a show aspect to it right where you'd go and you would have.
Speaker 1: Liked.
Speaker 0: Official schedule like seminars about different things you know not just necessarily repairs and calligraphy things are already done but you know different topics and you know more creative topics and then from like a show for prospective always wanted more local creators.
Speaker 1: At.
Speaker 0: The shows even if they're not in the pen industry like you know leather makers are bag makers or you know arts and crafts type stuff more than just a pinch of from the local environment not necessarily people that travel from show to show like the fountain pen people do.
Speaker 0: But more like if you're in Atlanta you grab some local like we know some back makers we know some artists I would love to see a more local spin in each of the shows to show off you know the art and creativity in the the makers of that particular area so you know I think a there's a kind of things I'd look at its super hard to get a hold that stuff off the ground you know I've looked at it for years and you know I'd love to have to make like the dream show one day.
Speaker 1: And you know maybe it'll happen you know.
Speaker 0: Maybe it'll make it'll come through but the yeah I think we could do something of a little bit different but I I generally you know.
Speaker 1: Like the shows that we have now in the fact that.
Speaker 0: We can go to some place and hang out with some of our friends and kind of make it our own that's my favorite part of the current shows and you know maybe we can work on the dream show setting as the years go on.
Speaker 1: All right if you wanna find channels this week go to relate on FM such panic slash two nine one thanks again to all find sponsors the great people's quest based pension LA and blue apron for their support of this week's episode if you wanna find brought online go and follow him on Instagram his pen addict on Instagram so you can play along with us next week.
Speaker 1: It is over a penitent dot com and knocked a co the show's pot replant them if you don't listen to the paramedics go to relate on offense the shows and take a look at some of the other shows that we have because I bet there might be something in there that would still be of interest to you we have lots and lots of varied wonderful content a real laugh them so.
Speaker 0: Around the gray.
Speaker 1: It shows a great shows is what they say.
Speaker 1: We'll be back next week until then thanks so much for listening by.
Speaker 0: Sick of mai breath goodbye Brett.
