Schneider Schreibgeräte GmbH is a manufacturer of writing instruments based in Schramberg-Tennenbronn. The company has about 500 employees in three locations in Germany (Schramberg-Tennenbronn, Wernigerode and Weilheim).

History[edit]

The family business, founded in 1938, initially produced screws and turned parts. After the end of the Second World War and due to the drop in sales of their exisitng products Schneider changed its production to ballpoint refills, after the management learned about the still fiarly new invention of ballpoint pens. Schneider was one of the world's first ballpoint pen manufacturers and made a significant contribution to the introduction of the DIN 16554 standard in 1958 which created industry-standard ballpoint pen dimensions. Schneider became the market leader. Their advertising slogan of the company "Die gute Schneider-Mine" (The good Schneider refill) was widely known.

Since 1957 Schneider has not only been producing refills, but also ballpoint pens. Later other writing instruments were added.

In 1991, the company acquired the East German fountain pen manufacturer VEB Heiko in Wernigerode.

Schneider Today[edit]

Today Schneider produces ballpoint pens, fountain pens, highlighters, rollerball pens, other markers, refills and ink cartridges. The production of these products takes place exclusively in Germany.

Schneider pays particular attention to environmental protection and says it is the only company that is certified according to the Environmental Management System in accordance with Eco-Management and Audit Scheme EMAS since 1998.
