Pen Chalet Sponsorship[edit]
Myke Hurley: From RelayFM, this is The Pen Addict, episode 254. Today's show is brought to you by Pen Chalet and Blue Apron. My name is Myke Hurley, and I am joined again by Brad Dowdy. Quick turnaround this week, Myke. Yep, like, what was it, three days? Although it feels like two days for me, right? Because I kind of made, I feel like I lost a day somewhere along the way, but it feels like we literally just recorded mere days ago.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, and I just got the chance to listen this morning, so it's especially close timing to me. So, but that was, I mean, does it get more fun than that?
Myke Hurley: I love the live show so much. I wish we could do it more, like, for all of my shows, but it's such a difficult thing to put together, but doing the show in front of 100 people, hearing them laugh at your jokes, and, you know, that's my favourite. That is honestly my favourite thing, when you make a dumb joke and people start laughing. Like, it's great, because there are so many times that I make a dumb joke and you don't laugh. But there are other people that will, and they do, right? And just stuff like that, it's good. It makes me have more fun, because there's more of a performance to it, and you're kind of, you know, messing around. So, I'm really excited that we're going to be doing at least one more live show this year, right? Yeah, yeah. In Chicago in October time.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, that's going to be awesome. I'm already ready for that. I'm like, I'm ready to start planning for that. Me too. Although we have a trip in between where there won't be a live show, and I'm not sure where that trip's going to be to, Myke. We have some discussions around that.
Myke Hurley: Should we just mention, very quickly, in case people are not sure about this, like, just a very brief aside. So, we've spoken about the DC Penn Show as being the middle place that we go to, and that we'll make a video there, and we'll be there in person. As we're recording today, which is the 26th of April, bearing in mind that the DC Penn Show should be happening in early August, there's no location and no date for the show. There's been some changes behind the scenes there. So, as it stands right now, we don't know if we'll be making that show, and so we may have to do something else. But we have some really cool ideas in mind if we can't do that, and we'll talk about those later if they come to pass. But as it stands right now, you may hear us making jokes about the fact that there currently is no DC Penn Show. Right. So, yeah.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, so we're going to have to make a decision in the next three or few weeks. Like, in May, our decision is going to have to be made because we have to arrange travel and schedules and all this stuff. So, if we're not comfortable with the DC thing, we may just have to punt and do something else. But we promise it will be, whatever we do will be well worth it, and we'll have to make it up to DC sometime if we don't get it.
Myke Hurley: And as promised, whatever we do, there will be a video that we put together, like a vlog style video. That's what we promised. No doubt. What we have in mind, I think, might be more fun from a vlog perspective. But we'll see. We'll see. You'll find out soon. But, yeah, that's the thing that's happening in the middle. And whatever it is, wherever we go, there will be meetups and stuff like that. No doubt.
Brad Dowdy: No doubt.
Guest Appearances[edit]
Myke Hurley: So, we had amazing guests, didn't we? I loved having Vito and Jonathan on the show. They were fantastic. I want to have Mr. Brooks back again in the future because I feel like we just scratched the surface of what it takes to build pens the way that he does, right? I feel like there's so many other things. We're going to talk a little bit later on in the show about his Arushi work, and we didn't even talk about that at all in our interview. So, there's a lot left there. We'll have to have him back on again in the future.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, I mentioned to him before the show that I do want to be prepared to tell us the basics, but I want to get really technical with him, and that wasn't the time or place to do that. No, everyone's falling asleep in the audience. It gets hot in that room. But, yeah, I would listen back this morning, and both Vito and Jonathan are straight-up pros. They nailed it, right? So good. Right out the bat. So, thanks to those guys for taking time out of their busy schedules to join us for that, and I think it went wonderfully. I really, really loved it. I listened again this morning, like I said, and just laughed and giggled and learned something. Once again, every time I listen to it, I learn more because you don't really necessarily get to listen as well as you'd like to when you're conducting the show. Exactly.
Myke Hurley: So, I'll just say, if you haven't listened to the episode, because it may be, this episode might bump the next episode out of your feed, right? Yeah. Because we're publishing so quickly. So, if you haven't listened, make sure you go back and check out episode 253, which was recorded live from the Atlanta Pen Show.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, because you flew that thing right out into the ether, like within, what, within two hours after we were done?
Myke Hurley: Well, I don't even think it was that long. Me and Stephen were working on it. It was great. He got it all set up and then handed it over to me, and I just did some checks and some tweaks, and we got it out. Honestly, I think it was out within an hour of us finishing. We were willing to get it out, like especially something like that. Like, you know, we're doing the live feed, and people know it's happening. You know, I don't want us to sit on it, you know? Right. And we work really hard when we do this stuff to get them out quickly, even more so with the live shows than the regular shows. Plus, because live shows are easier to edit, because you don't need to go through and do a bunch of stuff, right? Like, you don't have to go and cut out a bunch of words, because you can't.
Brad Dowdy: Right, and it's not the, you have built-in background noise, so you accept it, whereas it would be jarring on this episode, right? If something happened in the background on that episode, it's natural.
Myke Hurley: Yep, exactly. And we don't talk over each other so much, either, because you can look people in the eyes.
Brad Dowdy: Yes, yeah. And we do still have the video coming for that, and I can't wait for that. It's going to be pretty cool. And Stephen and Mark are pros. They do a great job. Oh, they're amazing. The Hackett brothers. They hook us, like, seriously hook us up big time with what they do. And Stephen was already screenshotting me, like, amounts of data that they captured. Huge amounts. And he says, yeah, like, 4K data is hard. So, yeah, so look for some 4K resolution video coming to you soon for all of our Kickstarter backers. Yep. Mid-May, late May, something like that. No immediate time frame, but those guys do such a great job, and they turn it around, actually, very quickly for what it is. So, two, three weeks, maybe, on the early end, then late May, late end.
Myke Hurley: It might be even sooner.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, sweet. Yeah, they're on it. So, I really appreciate all their hard work.
Myke Hurley: Yeah, they're the best. They really are the best. As I said, we couldn't do it without them. There's no way we would be able to get that video done at the quality that we can get it done. Zero chance that would happen. A couple of iPhones.
Brad Dowdy: Oh, yeah. My iPhone on a Gorillapod, staring at one person's face. It'd be great. Yeah, absolutely great. Oh, gosh.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So, you know, at the show, I carried around one pin pretty much the entire time because I'd just gotten it right before, and I know a bunch of people were asking about it. I had the Lamy Petrol, the new Safari color, and yours didn't quite make it in.
Lamy Safari[edit]
Myke Hurley: No, I got the Safari.
Brad Dowdy: I got the Safari. I didn't get the ink. Ah. Ah. So, you didn't. Did you have it at the show? I did, but I wasn't carrying it right. You were just waiting. Yeah. You were waiting for the ink, right?
Myke Hurley: Yeah.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So, what did you think about it? It's a great color.
Myke Hurley: Like, it's a great color. And I love all the black trim. I think that they made a good job, like a good idea in having everything black, right? Like, including the nib. I think that all works really well together. But yeah, the color is exactly what the color that I wanted it to be, which is, like, it's very close to the Relay Blue. It's a little darker. It is a little darker, but it's close. It's close enough that, like, if I don't look at them side by side, it looks like it is to me, you know? Right.
Brad Dowdy: So, are you claiming that as the Relay FM fountain pen officially? Yep.
Myke Hurley: I'm going to do that. That's my new thing. I was thinking, like, about the idea of maybe, like, buying a bunch of them and getting them engraved. But it's a shame that they're doing a limited run on these, you know? Because I could get them laser engraved or something.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. So, yeah. I don't know how that would work on that model. That's the one where the All-Star does win. Yeah. And if you're ticking checkboxes, engraveability, All-Star every time. So, there's that.
Myke Hurley: We gave away a lot of those Safari buttons, huh?
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, we did. That's always fun to hand out. Anna and I have just a straight-up blast for that. And full credit to her for that idea. It was wonderful because it just strikes up a fun little conversation. Every time we give one of those out, it's great.
Myke Hurley: Now, the ink for the petrol is MIA right now.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So, they're delayed from Lamy. Europe's getting them first. I think they might have started to show up. I've seen, I think, some bottles here and there. And they'll be May in the States. And I don't know how much we're getting. I mean, it's going to be right into dark lilac territory from the day it lands. So, if you want it, you should better be on the ball when it comes to those things hitting stores. But you do have a cartridge in yours, don't you? I do. I do. And the color's great. It's exactly what I thought it would be. You know, dark bluish green. It's like the bottom of the ocean. Like, the way, way where all the creepy stuff lives. Darkness.
Brad Dowdy: It's a wonderful. And that's one of my favorite colors. Like, I really, really like it. So, yeah. And mine's an extra fine nib. So, I haven't seen all of the fancy colors. And now it's really, really going to work. So, I'm waiting for the bottle. I'll be anxious to see that.
Platinum 3776[edit]
Myke Hurley: It's a couple of weeks ago. You posted on Instagram a picture of the Platinum 3776 Nice Lilas, right? Yes. Yes. Which is the one that I want. I was looking out for it at the pen show and didn't see it.
Brad Dowdy: You know what? Now that you say that, I didn't see it either.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. I reviewed that pen a couple weeks ago. Did you not pre-order that one?
Myke Hurley: No, I didn't in the end.
Brad Dowdy: Okay. You were wanting to see that one.
Myke Hurley: I wanted to see it. But I still want to buy it. So, I'm keeping my eye out for it. But I really do want to see it before I buy it.
Brad Dowdy: I think it's the best 3776 they've done in a while, honestly. Huh. If I didn't have some already, this one's the most unique out of their... All of their recent limited ones have all been clear barrels. You know, white. Yeah. You know, clear, icy looking. And just over and over and over again. Kind of like on the run where Lamy Safaris were doing just various shades of green. Over and over and over again. They were doing just clear barrels with something different. Some one had a rose gold trim. One was kind of frosted. Over and over and over. And this one is really great. This has been my favorite one to use out of the bunch. You know, if you're not going for a standard one and you want to pick up something a little different. But this one's a no-brainer to me. I like it. I'm probably not going to buy it just because I don't need it. But I did get it on loan to review and it lived up to everything I expected of it. Which I had high expectations of it and it met them all. Like, without question.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. I do. I really, really like this pen.
Myke Hurley: But yeah. You know, going to the pen show. Spending a bunch of money there. People were asking me about my Nakaya fund. You know, I mentioned I had a Nakaya fund going. The Nakaya fund has been blown on dental work. Yeah. So, I had to have a tooth pulled and it was really expensive. And unfortunately, I lost my Nakaya fund in the worst possible way.
Brad Dowdy: Well, I know exactly what you mean. Because I had to go through that late last year. And there's no cheap way around that. Nope. It's just awful. But, as we will talk later in this episode, you might have filled the pen need for that. So, it might be okay that the fund's not there anymore. Because you might have something to fill in. I have something. So, that's cool. Yeah.
Myke Hurley: What is the Kaveko Perkyo?
Kaveko Perkyo[edit]
Brad Dowdy: It sounds like a K-cup coffee, doesn't it? Uh-huh. Yeah. It's like going to be one of those little Keurig coffee makers. And this is the Kaveko's little cup called the Perkyo. So, it's basically... I saw this... I forget who sent it to me originally a couple weeks ago. It's basically the Pilot Kakuno version in Kaveko's lineup. Which is fantastic. Because you know how much I love.
Myke Hurley: It's mega cheap. Like a mega cheap Kaveko.
Brad Dowdy: Yes. So, it's kind of like an extended classic. Or sport. And they look fantastic. This is exactly what an entry-level pen should be like, I believe. Yep. So, I'm anxious to try these out. I don't have one on the way yet. They're in fun colors. You know, orange and black. Pink and black. Pink and gray. And kind of a white and blue, it looks like.
Myke Hurley: What I can't work out is the size of them. Like the pictures that are on Apple Boom. I can't work out if it is a sport size pen. No. It's a longer pen, right?
Brad Dowdy: It's made to be full size. Right. Okay. Like the Kakuno. I mean, I keep saying that because that's exactly what this looks like. Yeah. So, the barrel is already full length before you post the cap. Right. So, it's made to be, I think, kind of like the student pen, if you will.
Myke Hurley: Yep.
Brad Dowdy: Or the very entry-level pen. And Kaveko does great plastic barrels. So, they might as well mix this into the lineup. And I think it looks fantastic. And it's going to be, what, $15, $16. Yeah. So, it's right in that price point. It's going to be their lowest price point pen because the classics run about $25. Yep. So, this looks like along those lines. We'll see. You know, Kaveko's never completely solved their nib issues. People still have trouble with them. We'll see how these come out. You know, I know people, you know, have different issues with their nibs. But for this price point. I can't wait to get these in hand. And, you know, I will love to try this. It looks fantastic. I think I would have to go for black and yellow. That looks pretty cool.
Myke Hurley: I like the pink one a lot. Yeah. I think that's a real good look. Yeah. The colors are just really fun. They're really fun. This is a, yeah. This, I mean, I would like to try it. But, like, I had someone asking me today, like, what do you recommend for, like, a starter fountain pen? Or what fountain pen would you recommend buying that's good? And it won't be a bad thing if I lose it. You know, and I always go to the usuals, like, Lime Safari, Pilot Metropolitan, Toys B Eco. I actually have a Kakuno here, which I'll talk about a little bit later. And, you know, I'm interested to see what this one is like. Because it could be Kaveko's entry into the answer for that question.
Brad Dowdy: Right. Exactly. And because the, it's hard to recommend the classic, right? Because it's a short, light, kind of pocket pen. Yeah. And, you know, you don't want to give that someone to their, you don't want to do that for someone's first pen.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. Because it's like, oh, here's this tiny thing. You know. Yeah. It's weird. It'd be super weird. So, this could be a fun entry for that. So, the Kaveko nibs are real good, so.
Myke Hurley: All right. Talking about stuff that's real good. Let's talk about the Pen Chalet. You know Pen Chalet. Come on. You know Pen Chalet. Pen Chalet. Brad Dowdy: I kind of knew that. I've just been following, actually, London Stationary Week, which is a separate topic we can cover. But, I think it's in conjunction with World Stationary Day.
Myke Hurley: And, yeah. And, I think it's becoming World Stationary Day slash World Stationary Week. It seems like there is this whole thing going on. National Stationary Week is happening in Britain. And, World Stationary Day happens across the world. So, there's these two things going on right now. So, Pen Chalet are running special sales. And, they have a bunch of incredible giveaways as well. There'll be a link in the show notes for that, if you're interested. Thank you, as always, to Pen Chalet for their support of this show and RelayFM.
Brad Dowdy: Did you check out these links? I sure did. So, there's two ballpoints in here that I'm not saying I'm going back or turning any kind of corner. But, I'm actually enjoying writing with ballpoint pens from a convenience perspective. I've never seen the Pelican Bell before. Can I mention these?
Myke Hurley: I think you can. I haven't been told that you can't.
Brad Dowdy: I won't mention the prices because they're like 60 and 75% off. Yeah, let's not talk about the prices. The Pelican Bell looks like an ergonomic type pen. Wide, grip area, skinny, middle barrel, like for handwriting. The Impressa is the one that I would jump on just from a style perspective. And, Monteverde makes awesome refills. You can put all kinds of crazy things in there. And, these Porsche Design Slim Pens and the Stipula Etruria Magnifica are both pens that I've held and considered at pen shows. They're really nice looking. They're just kind of cool. I've actually had this Stipula I've looked at many, many times. This is an expensive pen because it's a limited edition and it's got these really unique colors. I keep going back to it.
Brad Dowdy: Jimmy Dollif has those on display whenever I go to a pen show and I always keep looking at them. So, maybe I'll have to think of that one day. So, yeah, great stuff from Ron as usual.
Pen Show Purchases[edit]
Myke Hurley: As always, of course. Thanks, Pen Shelley. All right. So, we spoke last week about some of the stuff that we bought at the pen show, but there were more days. You know, there was still Sunday. Sunday tends to be a shopping day. So, what did you walk away with from the pen show overall?
Brad Dowdy: So, three new pens, two that I purchased, one that was given to both of us. So, the one I mentioned on the show, which I didn't really, we didn't have time to necessarily go into it. There was a bum rush of this table on Saturday morning when, so this lady set up and no one knew who she was. At least none of us. I've never seen her before. She wasn't there on Friday. She gets her table, starts setting up, and then I forget who came over and told me. She was in the same room just down the aisle from where the knock table was. And I think it was Stacy. Yeah, she's laughing in the chat room, so it was probably her. She said, hey, she's got these Sailor Sapporo minis on her table for sale. So, I was like, oh, cool. Let me go look at them. And she had about eight of them. And she had a yellow one, which is, this is a pen that's discontinued. It's one that I've always wanted very much. And I would have taken any color. But she had yellow. She had blue. She had a bunch of black and rhodium trim, black and gold trim. I think that was it. And I was sitting there looking at them. We were going through, checking out the nibs. And our friend Casey was with us, too. And Casey goes, how much? And the lady goes, $50 sold. That's all I hear, like in my left ear. So, I said, okay. At that time, Stacy had the yellow one in her hand. I said, if you don't want that one, I'm going to buy that one. I said, and if not, I'll get one of these black ones. She's like, no, you can have it. So, that was really nice. So, I have a $50 Sailor Sapporo mini. So, the story gets even better. So, after we made our purchases, which is what you do before you start telling other people, I noticed that this lady also had Sailor Shalanas. Which, if you're not familiar with the Shalana, it's a long, skinny pen. It's kind of a fountain pen. It's kind of reminiscent of a big crystal. So, it's long and skinny, but it's metal. It has this really small nib. And I know that Lisa Van Es's husband, Myke, collects these. And this lady must have had 20 of them on the table. So, I said, well, I need to go tell Lisa that these are here because there might be some that Myke doesn't have. Because they don't really do them much anymore. You know, one or two designs a year. So, I went over there. And I'm telling Lisa. And then there was, like, several other people at the table. I was like, yeah, and they got these Sailor Sapporo minis. So, we had a little conga line heading back over to this table. And I think everyone had just wiped her out, like, in the next five minutes of all the cool stuff. And Lisa Van Es got a Shalana for Myke. And all the Sapporo minis were gone. And as it turns out, I started seeing people going over to greet this lady. And I'm sorry I keep calling her this lady because I don't know her name. I apologize for that. But she is apparently an old sailor distributor from the area. So, like, a bunch of the local people, like Mark Bacchus, knew exactly who she was, right, by name. And so, this was all just stuff that she had, I guess, sitting around the house. And it was time to offload it. And she did. And it ended up she had some Sailor Bespoke nibs in there that I missed. Like, I didn't spend enough time digging through anything. So, people got, you know, some really, really good buys from this table. And then by Sunday afternoon, she was gone. And she didn't, I mean, Saturday afternoon, she was gone and wasn't there Sunday. So, she blew out whatever she needed to. She had some really, really killer stuff. Obviously, because you're going to see a lot of pictures of Sailor Minis floating around now on Instagram.
Myke Hurley: I went for coffee for 20 minutes.
Myke Hurley: 20 minutes I'm gone from the pen show. So, we were on the hunt to try and find one of those unicorn Frappuccinos because they thought it would be funny to video me drinking one. And we couldn't find one. The Starbucks was out. Exactly. So, I had a coffee there with Stephen and Mark. Came back. And everyone's walking around with these Sailor Minis, waving them in my face. Look how good this nib is. Look how lovely this color is. $50.
Brad Dowdy: All these minis had weird nibs in it. There were Zoom nibs, music nibs, just stuff you just don't see. It was crazy. Sounds great. I'm glad I got one. Yeah, I'm sure you are. Because I've been wanting one for years. Just not available.
Myke Hurley: So, that was... I will say, though, I'm not too bothered about it because I really don't like the size of the pen. And I don't like that you kind of have to post it and it's got the screw, like the thread to post it. It's not my kind of pen. Would I have spent $50 on one? Yes, I would have. But it's not like she had a pink love in there or anything. Right, right, right. Because I would have been elbowing people out of the way to get to one of those things.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, you could tell this was stuff from whenever she had last had inventory, I'm guessing. Like, there was nothing, like, recent in there. So, it was good. So, that was, like, between Friday and Saturday, that was the only money I spent. You know, $50 on that pen. And then Sunday, we were really slow, like you were mentioning. Sunday's the day that I generally get to shop at a pen show because I can spend some time walking around. And I'd seen a few people bringing over Ryan Crusack's Legend model, which is the newest model he introduced last year. And I bought the L14 model from him, all wood barrel, at the San Francisco pen show last year. And I loved it. And since then, he's introduced a model called the L16, which is a little bit wider diameter barrel, a little denser, a little heavier. And several people came over to me showing me that they had bought those. And the new ones have little, I guess, jewel or stone type of inlays in the finial, which is real subtle. He has some, like, black ebony wood and we'll get, like, this tiger's eye, you know, jewel in there. And it's real subtle. Like, it's flat. Like, you can't see it if you're looking at the profile of the pen, right? You have to point it at you and look at it. So, I was going over there looking.
Myke Hurley: Wow, I found one of those with a tiger's eye.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, so he has those on his side. They're stunning. Absolutely stunning. And so, I just wanted to go see and check those out because I actually like the feel of the L16 more than the L14 that I already own. So, I'm over there. And one of the things that's always fascinated me with Ryan is he does scrimshaw work on pens. It's moose antler. So, it's naturally. Scrimshaw work. So, it's basically the scratching of an antler or in the old days, it was ivory. You basically take, like, a knife or a nail or something and you etch in a design. So, it's basically bone artwork, if you will. Yep. So, he uses naturally. I don't know if the word is shedded. But naturally shedded moose antler for his barrels. And he's always had them. He's always done them. But I never liked the section on the ones he was doing. But I love the artwork. Well, he decided to make the scrimshaw barrel in the L16, which is the legend shape barrel design, which is my favorite design. So, it was kind of like a no-brainer. It was like one of those things where everything kind of lines up perfectly. Like, it's the size and shape of the pen that I want with the material and artwork that I want. And I just had to have it. He also, you know, he also flame-torched the nib. So, it just matches the artwork on the pen very, very closely. So, the artwork is called Tempest. So, it's basically a ship, a large ship riding on a wave. And, you know, it's kind of an ocean scene. And it's just stunning. I haven't inked it up yet just because I've been so busy. And I haven't taken any pictures of it yet just because I've been so busy. I want to wait to ink it up. But I did find a picture of the exact pen. Maybe not the exact one that I have, but the exact model he does. I think this is like a numbered 150 of the 150 units of them. But he does lots of limited runs because all of this stuff is done by hand. And it's just fantastic. I'm in love with the pen so far. And I know I'll love it even more once I get it inked up and writing with it.
Myke Hurley: So, it's very protein.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah.
Brad Dowdy: That was it. I didn't buy any ink. I actually, I was so wanting to ink the Tempest up that I was over at the Anderson shopping for ink. I was like, you're dumb. You have so many blue inks at home. Just wait till you get home. I was like, so I somehow talked myself out of not buying another bottle of ink.
Myke Hurley: Why were you going to go with blue?
Brad Dowdy: Huh?
Myke Hurley: Why were you going to?
Brad Dowdy: Because ocean. I want an ocean.
Myke Hurley: I thought that would be the case, but I wanted to check. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Duh. It's like me. Like, my Maui Makai, my canalea, I waited till I got home to fill it with rubber oster. Is it Fire and Ice it's called? No. Right. Yeah. The blue ink. Yeah. Right? And I put a picture in the show notes, or video actually, of my canalea with ink in it. Yeah. So you can see it sloshing around because I had dropped it.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. Yeah.
Myke Hurley: So have you seen it? Did you see the video?
Brad Dowdy: Not yet. I got to go watch that. I don't want to pull it up. It's in the show notes. Yeah, I don't want to.
Myke Hurley: I'm going to destroy your connection if you do it right.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So I'll wait till we're done, but I will take a look at that.
Myke Hurley: See it.
Brad Dowdy: Because I want to see how that looks. I want to see how that looks. So what do you think now that you have it like inked up and rolling?
TWSBI Pen[edit]
Myke Hurley: Oh, I love it. Yeah. I really love it. I got just a steel 1.1 stub from them. Right. And it's great. Really great.
Brad Dowdy: It's good that they actually have like the all steel options, like the color. So instead of like gold or two-tone, that one really goes with that pen very, very well.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. I'm very happy with it. And I love it. It doesn't fit in any of my dudak docks. Yeah, no way. But I'm totally fine with this thing just living on my desk. So like I put the little bag that they've got that they put them in and put that down and it lives on top of it. I think I'm going to have to get a stand made for this or buy a stand for this.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, exactly. Because I have two pens sitting on sleeves right now sitting next to me while we podcast. Yeah. But yeah, you need something cool to put them in.
Myke Hurley: It sits next to my Sky at Night, which reminded me like that is, I know we joked about it, but that is straight up the material name now. It is. Jonathan has confirmed this. Like it is called Sky at Night, which I think is the best. Yep. I'm so happy about that. Yep, absolutely. It's done. They sit next to each other.
Myke Hurley: But it wasn't all that I bought though. I picked up a couple of small things really.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So like I knew none of this except like one thing way down the list.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. I kind of just ran around and did a bit of shopping on Sunday afternoon. Uh-huh. So I always take a look at Lisa Anderson. She's always right behind us. But she's got like a bunch of Retro 51s on offer always. And there's always stuff in her collection that I've never seen before. And this time one that I've walked away with is the Retro 51 Tornado Pencil Legal Pad. So it is a tornado. It's in tornado shape. It's not in their usual pencil shape that they do. Like the hex pencil. And the end of it, instead of it just being a colored kind of piece of plastic, disc of plastic, it's an eraser. So it's like a pink eraser. Then the body looks like legal pad. And the mechanical pencil comes out and in by twisting.
Brad Dowdy: That's kind of perfect. I've never seen that before.
Myke Hurley: I love it. The twisting mechanism is amazing. You can just twist it back, twist it out and then twist it back. Like just like it's the pen. It's really, really cool. Just the look of it and the mechanism. I'm really kind of fascinated by it. And in the box, they included like six erasers and a bunch of lead. Like pencil lead. So yeah, I love that one. That one like immediately went into my bag. And I was like, well, obviously I paid for it. But I'm like...
Brad Dowdy: We won't tell Lisa.
Myke Hurley: I was like, no, this is... I think this... I think she actually picked that one up to show it to me the day before. I think she knew that I would be interested in it. Because I was like, what you got? And she's like, I got the legal pad. Have you seen the legal pad? I was like, no, I have not. Story Supply, who we had on the show last week, their table was next to ours. And especially after hearing Vito's story on the show, I just went over and just bought a bunch of stuff from them. I haven't had time to try these out yet. But I picked up the... I just basically went over there and just picked up a bunch of things that I thought looked really interesting. So I got three sets of notebooks. The Pocket Staple Edition 407, which is this beautiful maroon one with like an embossed cover. The Myke Hawthorne Edition, just because we were talking about that. And there's a really good story behind that.
Brad Dowdy: And it's a good size. It's a bigger book.
Myke Hurley: Yeah, it's a bigger size. And it looks awesome, the illustration on the front. And the Pocket Staple Pencil Pusher Edition, which is where Story Supply worked with CW Pencil Enterprise to create a notebook. And it looks awesome. Comes in three great colors and two companies that I really like. So I went and picked those up as well. So I'm looking forward to trying those out. Again, I feel like I maybe didn't pay enough attention to their stuff before. I don't know why. I knew that they existed, but just never looked at it, right? Because I was like, I'm good for paper. But I heard somebody saying, it might have been you, that their paper is super fountain print friendly. It is.
Brad Dowdy: That Pocket Staple Edition, the one with the burgundy color, is straight up fantastic. It's wonderful. That's my favorite.
Myke Hurley: Okay, good. Right. So I'm going to crack that one out and give it a real good run through. Yeah. It was plus as well. I just couldn't help myself. Yeah. Well, it's great stuff. I want to support that company now because they're amazing. And Vito and Gabe are just great people. They were next to us for the whole weekend. Right. And I really think that if you should go to their website as well, and if you like the look of any of their products, maybe give them a try out. I think it would be good. Because plus you get that warm feeling because you're helping children as well, right? Children are going to get notebooks because of it. Yeah. So it's great. Yes.
Brad Dowdy: So they bring out the samples of the books they send to the kids out there. So they're posted up on the table when you see them, and you can see them online. So yeah, absolutely. You're supporting a great cause and getting a great product. Can't beat that.
Myke Hurley: I bought a Dino 2 pens. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I got her a Pilot Metropolitan just for when she eventually breaks her current one. I think she's on to like her fourth. Oh, wow. So I'll just wait. This one's just going to stay, and then she can just rotate it out at the time when it's necessary. Plus, she only ever wants the all black. She's unhappy with anything else. She doesn't want any of the colors, none of the patterns, all black. So that's the thing. I also picked her up a Pilot Kakuna because I want to see what she thinks of the nibs, and it's a fine. And yeah, and I thought this is a relatively cheap pen, and it could be introducing her to something else. So I got one of those. Plus, I thought that she would quite enjoy the winking nib because the nibs got a little wink etched into it, and I thought that she would quite enjoy that.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. And I'd actually like a report back on that. I'd be interested to know what she thinks about that.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. She hasn't tried them yet because I just gave them to it yesterday evening, but I want to see what she thinks of that too. I bought a bottle of JB Pen Flush.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. Are you going to just use it as intended? Yeah. Yeah. Just right in the bottle. I know. Straight in the bottle. I did mine wrong. Yeah. That's good. I think if anyone needs it, you probably need it.
Myke Hurley: What are you trying to say? Yeah, no, it's true. I do. I definitely do. I've heard stories. I'm already eyeing up the pens that we put through this. I also bought some, just my last thing, some Pilot Namiki purple cartridges. These Pilot Namiki cartridges are everywhere, right? But I picked up a pack of purple ones when I bought my M90 last year, and I have not been able to find them online anywhere.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. They're not easy to source. They're available. They're just not easy to come across. So when you see them, you should get them. Which is exactly what I did. You just keep running that through the M90, right? That's the ink for that pen, right?
Myke Hurley: Yeah. I'm using red right now because I ran through all the purple ones. Oh, okay. So I've been using red, but as soon as this red one's out, which is soon, I'm going to be jumping on the purple. Because I would say in the last year, this is my pen that has gotten the most use, without a shadow of a doubt. Gotcha. I've maybe run eight cartridges through this thing, and that's a lot for me. It just depends sitting on my desk, you know? Right. So yeah, I wanted to get some of the purple cartridges again because I really love that ink. It's a great color. Nice and simple. Yep.
Myke Hurley: This isn't the big one, though. We both got a pen that we didn't talk about last week. We were kind of saving it to give it some time this week. But that's a tease because right now I'm going to tell you about our friends over at Blue Apron for their sponsoring this week's episode. Blue Apron is the number one recipe delivery service that has the freshest ingredients. Their mission is to make incredible home cooking available to everyone. And they do this by offering their food at less than $10 a meal. Blue Apron will deliver seasonal recipes with fresh, high-quality ingredients to help you make these delicious meals at home. And then you end up with a whole bowl of garlic in your cupboard for like six months and it starts to smell because you haven't got anything else to use it with. You just get the one clove of garlic that you need. That is awesome. You can choose from a variety of new recipes every week or let Blue Apron's culinary team surprise you and no recipes are repeated within a year. Right now you can pick from foods such as crispy gnocchi with fontina cheese sauce and roasted baby broccoli, smoky seared catfish with glazed udon noodles, or lemongrass and ginger turkey burgers with marinated radishes and roasted sweet potatoes. Brad Dowdy: Yeah, I could have used some Blue Apron this week. I've been exhausted. I finally got some sleep last night. So that was good. This is the first day I felt like, okay, I'm back to normal. Cause yesterday, I mean, Monday was busy after the show. Tuesday was back home. Just getting absolutely, you know, out from under the rubble, you know, if you will, just busy, busy, busy. So I finally got some sleep last night. So I'm feeling good, but I could use some Blue Apron cause that stuff is awesome. All right. So Friday morning of the show, actually, let's go back to Thursday night. We see Jonathan and Shay walking around the show and Jonathan's like, Hey, I want to get with you guys tomorrow. Let's do it early. I don't want to, you know, I have something to give you and I want to kind of do it, you know, on the down low, you know, something private just between us. And so Myke and I are already like looking at each other like, Oh, this is going to be good. Well, I guess it is. Yeah. We're like, Oh, this could be good. No, I was like, this is going to be good. Whatever this is, I'm going to be happy with this. Yeah. Cause he said, I want to give you something. We're like, okay. So we saw him Friday morning. We set up, he set up and he came into our room. We were right across the hall. We were in our normal spot and one in the first ballroom on the left. And Jonathan was of course in the cool kids room. So he came over, he says, why don't y'all come over here now? Because it's not busy. And we're like, uh, yeah, we're, we're like following him over there, you know? And, uh, he wanted to do something for us for supporting him for all these years and talking about him and, you know, saying good things about him. He was just a show of, you know, doing something nice for us as, as a thank you for just, you know, helping him out. But what we received was beyond like anything I could have comprehended. So why don't you, you, uh, you deliver the goods here real quick.
Carolina Pen Company[edit]
Myke Hurley: So we've got this box, a sleeve on it. Take off the sleeve and there's a box that says Carolina Pen Company. You open that box, there's an acrylic box with the Pen Addict logo in orange on the top of this box.
Brad Dowdy: Box as fancy as all get out.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. It's like a wood thing or whatever, acrylic thing, but like it feels good, right? Mm-hmm. Open the box and there is a pen inside, which is orange with like black freckles or like, I wouldn't know. Specs. Specs. Yeah. I've taken two really bad photos.
Brad Dowdy: Which are in the show notes. Not going to lie, Myke, those are pretty bad, but I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet either. So.
Myke Hurley: You know what? I'm going to actually take better photos to put in the show notes for the listeners.
Brad Dowdy: And I'll get it in the, I'll get it in the light box sometime this week.
Myke Hurley: Yep. So I'm going to do that. I will take some better pictures. So, so, so the, so the, the live audience is seeing the terrible photos. I'm going to take some better ones. Um, so it's this orange pen and it's, and it's black speckles on it. And we then find out that it's a Rushi. It's an Rushi pen. Now, can you explain to people what that means?
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So it's, it's a, it's a lacquered pen over an ebonite, um, core, if you will. So it's a long cigar, cigar shaped pen, you know, very traditional Rushi barrel design and shape when one of my favorite shapes, um, you know, it's got a threaded just above the section. It's got a long, nice section. The section's wonderful. The threads don't get in the way. Everything's kind of smooth and all works together. But the, essentially the artwork is what I call it, um, is spectacular. You know, it just takes, it probably took him a couple of months, a few months to make this just layering on different layers of lacquer and Rushi. And I can't even explain, you know, like the material, um, that's in this Rushi, but it, it just came out wonderful. And it's orange, of course. And it's hard to explain. It's, it's one of those things you have to see in person. So it's fascinating. And then Myke opens up the cap, right? And we're looking around and John's like, yeah, I got you a medium, Brad and Myke, I got you a broad and, you know, their gold nibs. And, um, Shay's back there. She goes, and look at the nib. And then, uh, then Myke about, you know, I passed out and you started crying.
Myke Hurley: That's what happened. Yeah, pretty much. I love you always tell this story where you're like, Oh, Myke freaked out while you're standing there with like tears in your eyes.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So we had the exact opposite reaction. If two people could have a reaction at the same time and both in their natural habitat, Brad went into the shell and cried and Myke screamed. Yep.
Myke Hurley: Basically the nib, the nib of the pen has engraved on it, the pen addict logo, which is bonkers. I don't, I don't know how this was done. Um, I think Jonathan had these made, I think. Um, I don't think that he did them himself. I think, I think he may have had them made. I didn't ask him.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. We were too flabbergasted to, uh, to ask really how he did it.
Myke Hurley: But it's man, this has instantly become like a true favorite pen for me. I mean, plus it is smooth as you like, right? The writing experience on this thing is amazing, but this thing, I could put it on paper and it could like cut for every sheet of paper that I own and I wouldn't care. It would already be made a favorite, right? Like this is incredible. Like I, it's the quality of this pen is so good. It's like last year we found Jonathan and he was making these incredible acrylics. This year it's like, oh, now I make a Rushi pens as well. Like he had this whole line of them, um, on his table and like, you know, I, I don't want to, I don't want to like oversell it, but I'm looking at them and I'm like, those look like Nakaya's to me. Like you could take one of those, you could put it in my hand and I'll believe you. Like I would straight out believe you.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. They look fantastic. His, his work is really, really good. Like that. And that's why we have to get, uh, Brooks back on because we didn't talk about his Rushi pens. I know he had some new Ebonite pens there at the show. I saw some really amazing looking models of that. And I know, uh, I know we sold a few of them because people were bringing around showing to me and they were just fantastic. So the guy's got, uh, he's got a lot of things going on. He does. He does. Like he's, he's a mad scientist, which is what I call him on the show. And you know, when the output's like this, it's just fascinating. It's really, really good.
Pen Show[edit]
Myke Hurley: Yeah. I need to find out how he learned to do this part, right? Like how did, how did he get on the Rushi train and how was he doing that? Yep. What a, what a wonderful talent he is. Yeah. Really, really is. And I'm, I'm so pleased that we got to meet him last year, um, and kind of got to know him before he became a megastar, you know, we knew, we knew Brooks, we knew Brooks back in a day, you know?
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. We knew him, knew him when, so yeah, that was fun. And, uh, the pin, thank you, Jonathan. Yeah. It's just serious. Way uncalled for. Yeah.
Myke Hurley: You didn't need to do it, but I'm really pleased that you did.
Brad Dowdy: Definitely. But you can't have it back. Exactly. Shouldn't have done it. And I'm going to keep it.
Myke Hurley: Yep. You shouldn't have done it. And anytime you want to do it again, you shouldn't. But if you do.
Brad Dowdy: I'm here for you, Jonathan.
Myke Hurley: Yeah. We got your back, bro. Just in case. Yeah. Seriously. Incredible. Yep. But there was a reason we were at the pen show. Mm-hmm. Right. And there was a thing that me and you were doing three days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We were standing behind a table and we were selling products. I knew all the names. I can't remember the prices. Mm-hmm. But I got all the names set. I was in it.
Brad Dowdy: Yep.
Myke Hurley: And we were selling to anyone that would come near us. I was trying to get people to buy three cases at a time. Every time. You were awesome. Every time. Just trying to put more and more stuff in their hands. How did Knock do at the show, Brad?
Brad Dowdy: We did great. So, just as an overall big picture, we had a better year this year than last year, which you can't really hope for anything more than that. Right? That's awesome.
Myke Hurley: You know, because it's like, I think the thing is, is the concern there is how many new people are coming to the show? And like, of the people that have came before, do they want to buy more? And what can you do there? And stuff like that. So, it's a real challenge, I think, every year. You know, the more we go, the more risks there are that we'll sell less, right? As well as there are opportunities to sell more.
Brad Dowdy: Right. It's actually a huge challenge because now we have retail, too. So, a lot of these cases have been at retailers for a few months, right? So, you know, how many cases do people need and things like that? So, that's definitely a thing, right? You know, there's a lot of products that we had for sale that a lot of people already had. So, you wonder, you know, are we going to sell enough of these cases that have been out there for a few months? How many new cases can we make to bring to the show? So, we did introduce several new things just to, you know, give people options. You know, number one was a wax canvas Sinclair that sold extremely well. It's this beautiful micro wax canvas that I've never felt before we got the fabric in. Couldn't feel more different to a standard knot case. Yeah, it's very soft, actually, but it's going to be very durable on the exterior because of the fabric. And the burgundy interior just looks really, really nice and fancy with it. Those sold very, very well. We introduced the new Idea Dock version 2, which we worked with our buddy, Mr. Dudek, on. And that was received very, very well. Sold a bunch of those. It has pin slots in it, unlike our previous one just had like kind of a pin rest in it. And we also launched the Fodderstack XL in leather, which is our first leather good.
Myke Hurley: Yep.
Brad Dowdy: The reception on that was fantastic. We saw a bunch of those. Looks good. Everyone who came to the table picked that up. Yeah, smells good. What does it say? Smells like a farm. That was for Vito's leather. Yep. Because he was right next to us. And then we had the two new sizes of note cards, Gigante and Petite. You know, we had launched them on the site the week before, but this is the first time we've been able to get like lots of feedback from people. The Petite knocked people's socks off. They love that little card. And we sold a bunch of the Gigantes as well. So...
Myke Hurley: You know what? I think I really... I don't think I picked any of these up. Gosh darn it. I was looking at them.
Brad Dowdy: I think you said it like 10 times. Yep. And we just forgot to do it like on Monday. Yeah. We just get so busy, you forget things like that.
Myke Hurley: All right. Next time.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah.
Brad Dowdy: So... Friday and Saturday, we were slammed pretty much all day.
Myke Hurley: Friday was... Felt like a busier day than Saturday.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. Probably so. Probably so. We did almost the exact same amount of sales both days. And then Sunday was just stinky. There was no two ways about it. Sunday was a bad day. We never had a Sunday like this before because Atlanta had a huge storm. Roll through it that afternoon. Yep. So, it kept people away from the show. Which is okay because we did better on Friday and Saturday alone than we did all three days last year. Yeah.
Myke Hurley: And it gave me and you some time to like just go walk around the show and enjoy the show and that kind of thing. But yeah, we could have packed up at noon and we would have been fine.
Brad Dowdy: Yep. Yep. So... But we didn't. We stayed. We stayed around. We hung around. We stayed till about four. We started packing up about four. You know, just because it was really, really slow. Like I've never seen a show that slow on Sunday before. But it wasn't anyone's fault. It was just the weather. And just not a lot of time for people to get out there and see it. But, you know, we did learn that I had for all the like the cool colors and fun things that we do, people want to see even more color. Like, you know, if my takeaways from the show are we can't do enough color. Doesn't matter what. You know, all the bright colors sell. And, you know, people love... We had the Olive and Lime Lookout launch there. So that was another one. And it just... You can see it from a mile away. It just stands out on the table so much and people just gravitate towards that and loved it. So we sold a bunch of those.
Notebook Covers[edit]
Brad Dowdy: Anytime we can pull out of the old stock and make some interesting colors or crazy matchups, those always sell, right? The things you can't normally buy online or from retailers, those are what sells the most. It makes sense, right? Yeah. Except we've never had this opportunity to prove that. So we didn't know going into this show how we were going to do. We're glad we did well. But a lot of it's because we brought a lot of things that people weren't able to get before. Just directly. Which, you know, we'll always have like stock inventory cases. But we have to do like special show stuff if we really want to have like a good sales weekend at a show. Other than just standard stock items, which was something we learned. We kind of thought it would be that way. We didn't realize how much it would be that way. So now we're like... Jeff's like doubling down and just... Because Chicago, I leave a week from tomorrow, right? So he's trying to do whatever he can to, you know, not only make sure all the normal stuff's available. He's trying to put together a few different things as well. So that was our biggest takeaway. So it was a wonderful show. Feedback's always super positive about the products. And...
Myke Hurley: Yeah, you got to trial some new stuff, right? Some stuff that you're working on. You get to put them in people's hands, see what they think about them, learn some stuff.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. So we had our prototypes of the case, the notebook covers we have coming out in the fall. And we're actually going to modify one of them, one of the prototypes, just because of the feedback we got at the show.
Myke Hurley: So that's invaluable. Oh, yeah. I mean, you can't really pay for that sort of feedback because you get it differently, right? Like, this is just, like, honest. I'm holding it in my hands. There's no relationship feedback. And it's like... Right. Yeah, no, this is why your product should be different. And a lot of the times, like, it's easy to roll your eyes at that sort of stuff, right? There are people that, like, they come and they just give the funniest suggestions to me, right? And I'm like... Yeah. I always go, like, yeah, yeah, we'll think about that. And it's like, no, I'm all right.
Myke Hurley: But then every now and then, like, you're looking for something and you get some real, like, just some real actionable feedback that you can super do something with. And, I mean, I was seeing that in action at the show and that's really great.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. And I took away several notes, not even, like, case-related. One on our note cards, I got a brilliant idea that we've always been hung up on a certain thing about our note cards.
Brad Dowdy: And that's just offering them blank, right? Because people love our cards. Several people want them blank. Like, well, we kind of have a hang-up about selling you blank sheets of paper, right? That's not what we want to do. But I got talked about it with someone for, like, five or ten minutes. And we end up getting to a point where, huh, I think we might have, like, a new product here.
Brad Dowdy: So it's, like you said, it's invaluable to get that face time with people. They can hold products in your hands, tell you how they use them, tell you what you can do better. And us to take away that information is just stellar.
Myke Hurley: So, yeah. I think a real successful show overall, man. I mean, I had a great time. I felt way more tired this year, so that's a good thing, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. But it's great. I love it. I mean, I'm excited to do it again, you know? Yep. I already had the feeling of, like, I want Atlanta back. It's a great time. It's a great time. We have such fun. It's so nice to be around everyone and speak to people, meet people. And then at the same time, we have a good time, the three of us working, you know? Yeah, we do. We have fun. We're cracking jokes all day. Weird stuff happens. And, you know, it's great. It's a great time. We smile a lot. That's all you ask for. Yeah, we laugh a lot as well. It's a fun. It's a fun. It's a real fun show. And I think the three of us, me, you, and Jeff, have got into a real good groove with how we handle the show now. And I look forward to it every year because we have a great time.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah. And let me just say thanks to everyone who helped us throughout the weekend. I'm not going to name names because I'll be leaving someone out without question.
Myke Hurley: People that went and got us lunch. People that brought us drinks and snacks. You know, people that helped us pack boxes. And yeah, you know who you are. And we super appreciate it.
Brad Dowdy: Yeah, we had a bunch of help at Knock on Thursday and Monday. I mean, all that stuff. It's just super, super helpful. And thank you very much to everyone who did that. And you know what? It's like, it's pretty much everyone that comes by. You know, you have to turn some people away because someone's already gotten you lunch, which is fantastic. You know, it's very, very cool that the support we have in the community.
Myke Hurley: People look after us.
Brad Dowdy: It's really, it means a lot. And it's super helpful at the same time.
Myke Hurley: So I think we're done for the day, man.
Brad Dowdy: I think we are. You know, my voice was recovered this morning. But now that we've just talked for an hour straight, I'm already back into, I need some of Glenn HK's Hong Kong candy to start feeling better again.
Myke Hurley: But it's one of the funny things, right? People make, people joke or they ask us questions about like, the show's been going for like five years at this point. And we're like 250 episodes in. And it's like, oh, how long, how long can you keep it going for? And we recorded a show like four days ago. And we just recorded another hour. I think we're good. Yeah. There's more than enough. We'll be all right. You don't have to worry about us. Five more years. Five more years, we'll do it.
