Today's show is brought to you by Factor and Enigma Stationery. My name is Myke Hurley and I am joined by Brad Dowdy. Hi Brad. Hello Myke Hurley, how are you doing today? It's high season, Brad. High season right now. We're in it. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I don't know what that means, sure. Just we're in it. Is that a Britishism? For me? '''Myke Hurley:''' Like it's happening, you know, like it's peak time. == Pen Use == '''Brad Dowdy:''' Oh, all the things. Yeah. Yes. We're in people. Yeah, pens and stationery, like that's way down the list for this very specific period of time. '''Myke Hurley:''' It's just happening. Everything's happening. It's all go, go, go. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. How are you dealing with that? Like are you... Fine. Are you handling it well? Yeah. Fine, yeah. I mean, yeah, it's not long until we get to see each other again. I know. Usually this time of year, I'm already in Memphis. It's very weird. That is true. It is. Maybe that's what's throwing me off. Like September's halfway done. Yes. But it seems like September has a long way to go. Yes. If that makes sense. Yes. '''Myke Hurley:''' Usually today, I would be on campus doing a final run through for the podcast-a-thon being tomorrow. But it's not tomorrow. It's on October 2nd this year. So, very different feeling. It's good because I'm actually able to put all of the focus I need to into the other stuff I need to be doing right now. That's September, man. Yeah. Who chose these months? Yeah, I know. A couple of chuckleheads, probably. Speaking of St. Jude, let's actually speak about St. Jude. So, all month, we are once again coming together as a community to raise funds for the incredible St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. And Brad, this week, actually last weekend, we passed $5 million raised as a community since 2019. I think we're about, if not haven't hit it, we're about to hit halfway to our fundraising goal of this year. We did hit halfway. We've done it? Excellent. So, we've now passed $350,000. We're trying to raise $700,000 this year. But, you know, all of these numbers, they are just markers of the incredible support that this community shows towards Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. And, you know, St. Jude, they're based in Memphis. We talk about Memphis a lot. That's where we're going to go. That's where we're going to be broadcasting the podcast-a-thon from. It's where St. Jude is doing its research. It's where it's treating its patients. But St. Jude's reach is global. St. Jude has helped deliver free cancer medicines to children in seven countries with more to come. As of April this year, childhood cancer medicines have been delivered to seven countries. Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Ecuador, Nepal, Zambia, Jordan, and Moldova. This effort is part of the global platform for access to childhood cancer medicines, a collaboration between St. Jude, the World Health Organization, and some other global partners. The initiative aims to reach more than 120,000 children in 50 countries in the next seven years. With El Salvador, Ghana, Pakistan, Senegal, and Sri Lanka, they are the second set of countries scheduled to receive deliveries. So, the reach is global of St. Jude. So, no matter where you are in the world, you can know that the money that you're giving is helping kids, and then the medicines and the research is shared of institutions freely around the world. This September, you can help St. Jude give kids with cancer hope for more tomorrows. We're inviting you to help us reach that goal of $700,000 this September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. There are so many ways that you can support the campaign. You can go to stjude.org slash relay and make a donation. Your donation can unlock some fun rewards for you. Donors making an individual gift of $60 or more will be eligible to redeem a digital bundle that has campaign-themed wallpapers and a macOS screensaver. Donors making a gift of $100 or more can redeem the 2026 Western-themed sticker pack. Stickers with me and Brad. Yeehaw! As cowboys. Buckaroo. Buckaroo. What are you, Buckaroo, Brad? Is that your... Yep. Yep. So, we've been doing the polls for the naming. I think you were first, maybe? I was. I was. So, it feels like a lifetime ago. I think mine is beginning now. So, I actually don't know. I genuinely do not know, as I am here right now, what the two options between my names are because Stephen just decides them and, is my understanding, just changes them and he has a good, better idea. So, like, these things are all approved and decided upon. Then he keeps having ideas in the shower and changes them. So, people can go vote on me. So, when you make a donation, you can choose which of the two names you want to be mine when the poll's running. You can give them more tomorrow. Go to stjude.org slash relay to donate or start a fundraiser today. Now, fundraisers is people, something people can set up. You can raise funds with your own community and it all leads into our campaign. It's very easy on the page to find that out. That is what Brad is doing. Brad Big Money Dowdy, as they call him. He's just about to pass $15,000 raised for the kids of St. Jude already. And I know, Brad, you've got some stuff you want to mention about that. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. It's pretty wild to think about, not just the total number. I know probably you and Stephen haven't had time to think about, you know, being part of and leading a team that's raised $5 million for St. Jude. Like, it's hard to, like, grasp that we're a part of that and that y'all are, like, really, like, you know, the core behind this. But, like, really just how important our community is to be able to get behind this. Yeah. And especially, like, the Penn Addict community, having all these makers, like, I reach out to a bunch of makers and say, hey, I'm doing, you know, my St. Jude fundraiser. And, like, so many people want to participate. And I'm just so thankful for that. And I'm so thankful for everyone who chooses to donate. We have a bunch of great rewards. I'm doing, you know, if you do, like, the donations on the Penn Addict campaign, you know, I have some postcard and some ink ponies that I'm going to be painting later, you know, once the campaign closes. So I've got some great incentives for that. And then we have some giveaways that I am just, like, super, super thankful for, all these donations to just help us raise awareness. These donations are free for anyone. And I'm really just doing it to shine a light on everything we do for or everything St. Jude does and everything we do for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and raising money. So just a quick shout out. We're going to have a lot more to come as the fundraisers. Every $2,000 raised, I launch a new giveaway. So, so far, we've had pins from Skogsie Pen Co., River City Pen Co., Myke's Pen Fun, Estabrook, Maverick Pins, Hello Tello Studio. And as of this morning, this was the, when we crossed the $14,000 threshold, a beautiful pin from Fountain Telling. So that's the latest one. And each, each post has links to all the previous ones before it. So go check them out. And, you know, it's, you know, if you can just share, like, our campaign, like, you don't have to donate. These are free for, literally anyone can go do it. But, you know, share what we're doing, you know, share that we're raising money for St. Jude. Share, you know, this, this whole month. It's, it's super helpful to all of us. And this community has been great, great supporters. So thank you to everyone. '''Brad Dowdy:''' St. Jude.org slash relay. '''Myke Hurley:''' You find everything you need there. We did Stationary Fest a few weeks ago. And we did some panels that we said were filmed. One of those has now appeared on the Useka Stationary YouTube channel. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, I was super surprised when I just saw it in my feed. I was just going to YouTube to, who knows, look at something. And I was like, oh, there's the panel. And it already had, like, 4,000 views. I was like, when did this come out? It was like a day. It was like a day. And the first thing, you know what I, you know what I immediately did, Myke? It's something we talked about before. Do you know what I immediately did? No. Checked your audio. Oh, my God, I forgot we were sharing a microphone. How was it? Was it okay? It was great. I couldn't believe it. It was perfect. '''Myke Hurley:''' This is probably one of the reasons it's taken, it's taken this long to show up. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. So, just a little inside baseball, which now you can see it. Yeah. Every panel was Myke and I were the hosts, and then we had three guests. So, that's five people, but there were only four microphones. So, now, if you go look at the video, you'll see the microphone on, like, my left shirt pocket pointing at Myke. Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' And you'll see that when I remember, I'm talking into Brad's pocket is what I'm attempting to do. But I don't think I have a complete, like, I don't think I keep that in my mind the entire time because that's quite a way to live your life, to talk directly into someone's pocket. But I tried. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It worked. You wouldn't notice. These panels were really good. Yeah. So, that's the other thing. It's like, I haven't gone back and re-watched it, but these went so well. I mean, that's just, you know, obviously us talking about us doing things, but you never know how this is going to go. So, and it was just, it's just fun to get to talk to people, especially new people. Like, we had two out of the three people on this first panel, Jenny Bick and Aura Stell. We had not met Tiki from Aura Stell or Jenny Bick, and we knew Ryan from Estabrook for a long time. But these are, like, the OGs in the space was kind of the theory of this panel, 10 years of stationery. So, getting to talk about them and their types of businesses and what's changed over the last 10 years was very fun. Yeah. And we noticed in this panel, and then it happened through the other panels, is the panelists, some of them didn't know each other either, and they just started picking each other's brain just right up there on the thing. And it was just on the, in front of the camera. It was kind of hilarious in a good way. So, everyone was super fun, super interesting. So, go check that out. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. And if anything, you want to just watch the Brady Brunt Munch style intro at the beginning. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure. Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' We've got a couple of follow-up items on refills that we've been mentioning. Mm-hmm. So, Greg wrote in and said, you might be interested to find out that the Uniball and Knot, this is directed at me, by the way, can use the refills from your One 3 or Zentoflow multi-pens. If you're not a fan of the Jetstream refill, but like the pen, you should be able to swap it out with one of these refills from the other pens that you got. That's a good point. I would need to buy more refills because I'm enjoying both of these pens, right? So, I don't want to take them apart. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. We talked about this when I had got mine. Yep. And I didn't... I knew you could swap these with like the multi-pen type refills, and I chose not to because I find like the ballpoint type ink of the Gelstream is much more stable in a pen that's designed to get banged around. You tend to... I tend to have less like tip gunk and just extra ink coming out of the tip with a Jetstream style refill as opposed to like a gel ink refill for a pen that gets knocked around like this one's designed... This one's purposefully designed to be knocked around, and I just stuck with the Jetstream because of that. So, but yes, you can swap those in. I swap refills constantly. This one I did keep for a very specific reason. '''Myke Hurley:''' And Matcha wrote in and said, on the last episode, Brad was lamenting that the Uniball 1 refills are terrible in color, but that the 207 Signo lines were much better. Can he not just put a 207 or Signo colored refill in his beloved 1P? From looking at the Uni website, it says it appears that it may fit. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yep, 100%. You can do that. I choose not to because I like the black ink so much. So I don't really need those color inks. If I did, I'd be looking at something like the RT1 Signo in blue, black, or lavender, purple. Those would swap in there. Not the DX, not the UM-151, but the model that goes in the RT1 is also compatible with like the 207s and that type of thing. So that should fit just fine in the P, although I haven't tried it, but they should be the same. So yeah, I'd be looking. The best color ink lineup is the RT1, and they have the refills that I would use. But I just, I really love the black ink. The black 1 0.38 refill is what I use in the 1P, and that might not even come with it. It's just fantastic. I don't need to, I'm not looking to switch that one up for that reason. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So yeah, but good shout. They are swappable. That's another reason why the 1P works so well. It's just, it looks like it shouldn't fit a full-size refill, but it's perfectly designed to fit Uniball's full-size refills. And that's just an added bonus to that great pen shape, which still just kind of blows my mind. '''Myke Hurley:''' So you wanted to do a little check-in on what we're using right now, or today. I did today, but maybe yours is a bit bigger. Do you want to get started? '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, for sure. It was, we haven't done this in a while, and I was just thinking about it. It's like, oh, yeah, let's talk about a few things. == Fountain Pen Review == '''Brad Dowdy:''' Number one is a fountain pen that I've been using on and off since April, and I'm finally just getting around to reviewing it. I said I'm going to review it, and I've talked about it before. The Heinz Pen Sleepnir. I don't know if I'm exactly pronouncing that. It's, what is it? It's a large, large faceted barrel pen from Heinz Pins. It's, it's a big pen, and I'm normally not a, I definitely have a few big pens that I get along with. And this one, I am getting along with. It feels just fantastic. So the material I have is called Dark Side. There's actually a picture of that on there, on the page that I linked in the show notes. It's just a beautiful pen, a beautiful material. I am enjoying this more than I ought to be enjoying this. It also has, you know, Heinz Pins does these. '''Myke Hurley:''' Whoa, there's, this is, this reminds me, this, the look of this pen, the Dark Side, reminds me a lot of, there was that, was it the Leonardo that had the two different resin materials? Yeah. Like, it had, like, orange and primary manipulation? '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, yeah, yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' This reminds me of that. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Oh, you mean, like, the Tiger King of pen? Like, that one? '''Myke Hurley:''' Tiger King of pen, yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' The Delta, but it was still primary. Delta, that's it. '''Myke Hurley:''' It was a Delta. Yeah, it reminds me of that, because it's like, here's this, and then also here's some orange. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, so it's got this orange cat band, which you wouldn't expect. And do all of this Leipnir models have, like, that cat band? Yeah, so that's like, looks like a feature. Well, I guess not all of them. There's some different cat band designs in here. But I was looking at this, at the pictures, like, they have on the website. I was like, dang, all of these look good. Like, mine looks great. But, and Heinz gave this to me at the Atlanta Pen Show to use and review. So, you know, I did get it for free. But I am going to review it soon. But I've been using it. It's been on my desk pretty much since then. It has, what I was going to say earlier, one of the things that Heinz Pen Co. does is those electroplated nibs, right? So, I have a green 1.1 stub nib that matches kind of like the green brightness in that material. And it's just kind of like smashing, smashingly good. It's, I don't know, it's super good. So, anyway, I'll be reviewing that soon just because I've meant to have been doing it for months. And I just get so much stuff and things rotate in and out. And this one's back on the radar. I'll probably review it for next week, to be quite honest. Um, like I said, I always like to spend some time with pens and use them. And I've been using this one plenty. So, it's good to go. I have it inked up from day one all the way back in April. I inked it up. It's, there were a lot of good colors I could choose for this, right? I do like to compliment the pen or even go full matchy-matchy. Well, there is no, like, direct match to this. But you could use, like, dark purples. You could use oranges. You could use bright greens. But I had ordered some ink from Ink Dependence Myke. And he had some Diamine ink collaborations. And he has one called Don't Trust a Bivalve. I'm not going to pretend to know the story behind the naming. You know, inside joke type of stuff. But it's a really amazing kind of blue-black. And it's a perfect match for this pen. That's the only pen. I've inked this pen, like, three times now. And I've only used Don't Trust a Bivalve. Because it's just kind of this perfect dark match to everything that's going on this pen, in this pen material. So, but you could literally throw anything at this pen. There's so much color in the dark side material. So, that's the ink I've been using in it and have been using for a while. And it's probably, I don't know, one of my more used, like, dark blues, blue-blacks. And that's a color that I obviously love. And I've been using this one a bunch. Next up is kind of a random one. I picked this notebook up from Anna at the Well-Appointed Desk at the St. Louis Pen Show. It's the Marks, Inc. Edit Grid Notebooks. And we've talked about this. '''Myke Hurley:''' Marks is the company that owns a bunch of brands, right? Or is it there a sub-brand or something? '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's weird. And I don't have all the details. But what I do know, and maybe what you're thinking of, is Pilot bought them about two or three years ago. '''Myke Hurley:''' That is what I'm thinking of. Yes, and that they didn't release a lot since. But they're not doing anything with it. == Edit Paper == '''Brad Dowdy:''' There's no, like, Pilot Marks products. They keep saying there's going to be a Pilot notebook. Well, if there's a notebook, Marks edit paper. So, edit describes the interior paper for these notebooks. So, there's other Marks notebooks that are not the edit paper. Does that make sense? Nope. Uh-huh. So, edit is what you want if you want a very thin... This is like MD. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, yeah, totally. Totally. So, you can buy Marks paper. And it's fine. '''Myke Hurley:''' Uh-huh. '''Brad Dowdy:''' But if you're going to use fountain pens, and, like, I've done ink samples on these pages, you want the edit paper. Edit. It is the thin, crinkly, Tomoe, OG Tomoe River-esque feeling paper that I love so much. It's not going to be everyone's jam. It's legitimately good. It's one of those papers, like, whenever... I don't know if... I think a lot of people will remember back when we kind of... The world first discovered Tomoe River 52 GSM paper. You touch it and feel it, and you're saying, there's no way that this is going to work. Right? This is just not going to work for pens. Then you're like, oh my gosh. Like, it's kind of crazy. And it does work. This is not all the way there. Nothing will ever be all the way there. I don't want to pretend that it is. It's pretty freaking close. And you get that crinkle in there that I've always loved with the Tomoe River. And that's how you know it's, like, it's a thin, firm page. And it handles ink really, really well. So, edit paper for marks is what you're looking for. I have a small one that I'm using for ink samples. It's B7. What a terrible name. B7 Semi Size. That's, like, look, that's just a stupid name. But, like, I've given up that battle on naming conventions. But it's a fun size. It's, you know, a little bit bigger than a business card. It's, like, a credit, a little bit bigger than a credit card size notebook. Okay. And it's been good. But I do have an A5 size one that I'll probably do a proper review of. Because I think the paper is very quality. On standard pens, we have a Spoke Rohde Model 3 that we've been working on at Spoke Design for months. It's supposed to have been out months ago. We just, you know, keep tweaking and changing. I think it's going to be out this week, maybe. But I have my official prototype. Yeah. I can't say for sure. You can never say for sure, Myke, with Spoke Design. Who knows what those guys do. '''Brad Dowdy:''' But it's really good. I'm looking forward to getting this in people's hands. It's an updated design of the Rohde where the magnet cap is now in the center band instead of at the top of the pin. What difference does that make? So it attaches in the front and the back. The magnet's in the middle. '''Myke Hurley:''' Okay, Brad. Thank you. Can you help me a little bit more? You are the marketing department, I think. Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I was proud of that one. It just keeps that front end magnet from causing any problems. It doesn't really cause any problems with the refill or anything like that. But we wanted to do this to have a more modular design with the cap and the barrel that we can use in different places. So it's a deep posting on the barrel just like the Rohde was before. But it then now connects in the middle. And I know it's just kind of a more unique and fun and functional look than having it just on the top end of the cap and attaching to the front and back of the pin. So I think it's going to work out well. And it's going to allow us to do a lot of different things with different areas of the pin as far as like colors and materials and things like that. A little more freedom with the magnet in the middle. '''Myke Hurley:''' I would just like it to be shown that there was obviously things that he could mention and I tried to give him the opportunity. '''Myke Hurley:''' And, you know, this is how I was treated. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Well, I'm going to treat you worse now because I actually I'm going to start using something I think today that I want to talk about later. So we're going to hold that thought. That'll actually be in the what we're using. But it's not what I have been using. It's what I'm about to start using. It's going to come up later in the episode or later in forever? Later in both. '''Myke Hurley:''' Gang, he's on one. Stand back, he's on one. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I just like driving you crazy. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So, yeah, that's that's pretty much what I'm using. I got it. Right now, like we're in it. We're in I'm my my desk overflow with Myke of cool stuff. So like I could talk about 50 more things today, I think. But you know who has at least 500 more things? That's our good friends over at Enigma Stationery. == Enigma Stationery == '''Myke Hurley:''' I forgive you for the incredible transition. Enigma Stationery, they offer unique items made from in-house designs along with top brands and hard to find imports. We love Enigma Stationery for many reasons. We love Enigma Stationery for many reasons, but one of them is they're always adding really cool, new, fun, weird, excellent, awesome stuff. That's a good way to put it. Yeah. We called this out before, but I want to call it out again because when we were talking either last week or a couple of weeks ago about their SF pen show and not custom pens that they had made, I hadn't seen it at that point. And they now have them on the website. And it's so good. Like and I've seen Enigma because now I follow them on Instagram, Brad, which is a great time, by the way. They're talking about like they want to do more and more of this kind of like custom. I think they have like one of those UV printers, which I'm seeing a lot on Instagram now. Yeah. And they're going to be, it looks like doing a lot more customization stuff. So that's extra fun, I think. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. And when you find a platform pen like that, it's essentially made for this. Like I'm guessing Uniball assumes some of that in the beginning, just the platform that this pen allows. And if they didn't, they're missing out because people like Enigma are going to just take this and run with it because it's just tailor made for this. So I bought one, I had one of those pens bought for me at the show, this SF pen show one, because it's so cool. So I don't have it in hand yet. I just got to get that from Kimberly to ship them out my way. She picked up a few things for me at this SF pen show. She says, do you want, I hadn't seen it when she texted me. She's like, do you want this? I'm like, oh my God, yes. So I do, I do have that as well. '''Myke Hurley:''' And also they have the hot dog pen too. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. The hot dog pen is great. Like, you know, I, I need to rethink, you know, mine, you know, maybe do a little, little repaint, little extra coating. So we don't, you know, get mustard stains on our shirt anymore. But if I did need a new shirt, Myke, I could just grab one from Enigma stationery because they've done these great, this great collaboration with Secura Dragon. Yes. The artwork that Secura Dragon did in collaboration with Enigma is so freaking cool. Yes. Like, like, I, I love like the print style where you get just the more like the, it's almost like a risograph type. I don't, I guess it is a risograph. So where you just have these like vibrant, like blues and oranges, but then you have like the traditional, like if you were designing like the artwork for the shirt or the stickers or the stamps or the bag, all that stuff looks like spectacular. But I don't know. I love this style of art and having Enigma work directly with an artist to, to make this stuff. Just like Secura Dragon recently worked with Esther Brook, right? We talked about that pen that they did and the other accessories that they did. So they're, they're living their best life right now. Not just Secura Dragon, but all the Secura Dragon collaboration stuff over at Enigma stationery. It's really, really cool. I look at this and it's like, all of this stuff is great. It's really well done. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. It's awesome. So you should go and check it all out for yourself by going to see everything Enigma stationery has on offer, not just the stuff that we like. Because it's very easy to get yourself $10 off on orders of $50 or more just by going to enigmastationery.com slash penaddict and using the code TPA26 at checkout now. That is enigmastationery.com slash penaddict and you'll get $10 off on orders of $50 or more with the code TPA26. Our thanks to Enigma stationery for their support of this show and Relay. '''Brad Dowdy:''' All right, Myke, we got our shout out of the week. Shout out of the week. Kristen Create. So I've been following Kristen for a little while and this post was timely that I saw on Instagram where, I don't know if it was a week or two ago, probably two weeks ago. We were talking about some of the Hobonichi stuff and specifically we were discussing the Hobonichi Kakamori ink set where you get a bottle of ink. Well, I say bottle. It's like a four millimeter ink to match the month color of the label printing in the Hobonichi, right? The grid color and the little box on the side of the page that denotes the month. So each of those 12 months has a different color. So they did this ink set. It was very expensive and there were very small amounts of ink in there. So, you know, definitely some frustration with that. But the concept was cool. So what Kristen did was made a list of inks that you may have already or you can buy separately if you're interested in just like one of the inks or two of the inks that are widely available that match each of the month. So this whole Hobonichi ink dupes shopping list. So there's a PDF file we'll put in there. I found it first on the Instagram, but Kristen had an actual PDF that goes through. The PDF is more clear, I think. PDF is super clear. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you can see the whole thing. And it's got three options for each more two to three options for each month, depending like on the shade. So I just think this is a cool thing. This is why we like it's always fun that when the community gets involved in, you know, does this. She has some videos linked to it to see the inks in action. So action. Yeah, it's it's really cool. So shout out, Kristen, for doing that. And I think a lot of people are looking forward to that. So that's good stuff. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, this rules. This is a nice idea. I like this a lot. Love it. You want to hear about what I've been using? I actually do. So today on the desk. Well, when I'm when I'm when I'm recording a podcast, I always use one of the lined sidekick pocket notebooks that we make a Cortex brand. Yeah. Because I've mentioned many times I'm not going to use lined paper otherwise. And I have these. And so, you know, it's just I can just scribble down some notes or whatever. I have it sitting on top of a sidekick notepad that that's what I use for meetings. Like if I'm actually going to do bigger stuff or writing down ideas. But underneath. So it's kind of funny, really. So the sidekick pocket sits on top of the sidekick notepad. If I if I lift the sidekick pocket underneath where that sits is blank. Every inch of the notepad underneath it is doodled on. I love it. Yep. So because I'm also just doodling as well. And it's one of the two reasons why the notepad exists is for note taking and doodling because that's just what I wanted in my life. And it works great for me. So I use both of those daily. And today I'm I'm color matching with my yellow Loach Term Drigafel number two pencil. Color match is very nice with the yellow sidekick pocket. So that's what I'm using today for note taking. But then I also wanted to mention I'm also going to talk about this a little bit later on in the show, too. But I have been really enjoying the pairing of my Rotofaden Taschenberg Leiter with the MD Paper A5 notebook that I have in it. And the Uniball 1 3 color. I've been using those a lot. Oh, nice. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Last week together. God, that's a good setup. Yeah, it's a great setup. Like just the like I'm just the Rotofaden MD Paper Uniball 1 3 color. Boom. However. Very, very good. The Uniball 1 obviously doesn't go in the pen loop. True. It's a chunky little. It's basically the Uniball 1P in multi-pen form. Yeah. The way that's designed. Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' So it does not fit in the pen loop. But that's fine. I have my Uni Kuretoga. '''Myke Hurley:''' What is the one that I have that has the wood grip? It's literally called wood. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Really? Okay. Yes. Kuretoga wood. Yeah. There you go. I have the Kuretoga wood. And you have the olive barrel? No, I have the blue one. Olive blue. Yeah. Same. I love that one. Yeah. That's the best Kuretoga. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. Yeah. It's real good. It's real good. It just looks fantastic. Like it's just a really, really good looking mechanical pencil. I'm a big fan of it. I'm a big fan of it. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yep. That is my number one Kuretoga. Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. So that's my stuff. '''Myke Hurley:''' That's what I've been using recently. '''Brad Dowdy:''' That's a good setup. I like it. I really like that. I was kind of curious, you know, to hear about the Rotor Foden and the Uni one. So that's good. Couple points of follow up or new product talk I wanted to hit. My Platinum Kimono Fountain Pen review is up. Okay. That is the pocketable Platinum. == Platinum Pen == '''Myke Hurley:''' This is the Chinese only. Chinese market. Little Platinum that Jacob did a review of, right? Exactly. Couple weeks ago. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. This is a great pen. And I hemmed and hawed on should I actually review this if kind of like your only options to get it is pretty much either going through AliExpress or going through someone that's going to have like a huge markup on it because they've gone through AliExpress and then resell them. Right? Like I found a retailer that had them for $80 and it's like a $20 to $30 pen. Right? Don't do that. It's not worth that much. But I decided, yeah, I think this is just a cool pen and I would love it to see a pen like this just be brought to the worldwide market. I think it would just, it would crush like at this price point. And, you know, I'm not up in Platinum's business, but to be honest, it doesn't seem like it's been going great for the past few years and I know this is a small dollar amount type of pen, but it's just like a, it's a great design and it would just be fun to have like in the worldwide product lineup for Platinum. I mean, they do it in five colors. It works exceptionally well. Like I said, the only hang up are the cartridges, the cartridge length specifically, the fitting's the same, but you can't use any of your Platinum cartridges or converters with it. It's too short. The barrel's too short. But, I don't know. Just deal with it. '''Myke Hurley:''' I wonder if this is just one of those things that if you tried to bring this to a different market, you just can't hit the price point. And if you can't hit the price point, it undermines the product's existence. That is the only thing that I can think of as to why you would do this. Because if you're making something for China, the quantities are already massive, right? Right. Right. It's, you know, it's that you're, you're, you're, would be my assumption, right? Like if you're making something for the Chinese market, you're making something for one of the most popular nations on earth. So, yeah. And they literally have a factory there. Yes. '''Brad Dowdy:''' This is an in-country factory. '''Myke Hurley:''' So, it's not like it's a scale issue, which is my, for why you couldn't bring it outside. And so, I've got to assume that it is a cost thing. Yeah. That like, they feel this pen can only work at this price, whatever it would be, right? Because it looks cheap, right? Like it does, right? Because it is. And so, if you took it out of that market, would you be able to sell it for a low price? And maybe they feel like they can't? It's the only reason I can think of why you would do this. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I don't know. I've seen this as low as like $9 on AliExpress. Right now, it's $14. Like this is, could be, this is an easy $30 pen in the rest of the world. Like I wouldn't have any issue with that. $30, $35. '''Myke Hurley:''' There has to be a business reason then. There has to be, right? Like maybe they can't do it. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. The refill thing is a thing. Like I don't want to ignore that. I think that is. That would be a big blocker. I mean, it should be a big blocker everywhere. Yeah. You're opening up a can of worms. With that. I don't know. This is, it's a great, it's a great little pen. '''Myke Hurley:''' It's bad enough that all, that many of these brands have proprietary refill systems anyway. Right? Yeah. And now it's like, oh, we have another one? Yeah. It's not even our regular proprietary refill system. It's a new proprietary refill system. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Exactly. It just, it's okay. Yeah. Okay. Platinum. But still, great pen. Anyway, go read about it. It's a, it's a, it's a fun, like if you have the opportunity, I wouldn't go hunt this down. Like you don't need to chase to the end of the world. You know, that's another reason. Like I'm always hesitant to review is like, I don't know where you're going to get this from, but it's, it's compelling in, in a lot of ways that I like to read about stationary. It's just an interesting product. Similar to the kimono. I totally missed this apparently from a few months ago, but I saw a post recently on Instagram. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Who was this from? Posey Bangu, which is a Japanese stationary store. And I was like, what is this Faber-Castell loom doing in this picture? Like it looks small. And I was like, oh my gosh, it's actually a Faber-Castell loom pocket. So similar to the kimono, it is a smaller pocket pen. Faber-Castell has a model called the loom. We've reviewed it over the years on the pin addict, reviewed it very positively. It's like a 60-ish dollar pen. It's like an aluminum barrel. It's like their mid-range upgrade Faber-Castell pen. Like you go from some of the, like I did the Polyflow review recently. That was like a $22 pen. So this is like you're a couple steps up from that with an aluminum barrel. These are gorgeous. Like I love everything about these, these little pens. I'm obviously a huge pocket pen fan. I would use this way more than I would use the loom. '''Myke Hurley:''' It looks like they come in some really beautiful specialized gift sets. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So this is like, okay, Lamy, we see you and we're going to do the same thing. Like that's at first, when I saw the big picture with all the packages in us, is this some Lamy product that I've missed? And it's like, oh no, it's Faber-Castell. Bright colors, vibrant art, a kit, you know, for a pen. Like Lamy, again, that's a Lamy Asian market thing. We don't get that like in other markets in the US and in Europe. Right? Lamy does these kits where you get like the characters and you get the clip, you know, the clip animals and things like that. All these little bonus things. This has like fancy packaging and a notebook and just a whole theming around these kits. And I think this also might be an Asian only product. Like I can't tell yet. I've been trying to dig around. I can't tell if it's like Japan. Is it Hong Kong? Is it Chinese market? I don't know. So I can't totally tell. I was working on that yesterday and I just could not nail it down. There's not a lot of info on it. '''Myke Hurley:''' It says exclusive overseas models is the translation on this Instagram post. '''Brad Dowdy:''' From a Japanese store. So to me, that means China or Hong Kong. '''Myke Hurley:''' So they are overseas to Japan, right? But this company's got them to sell somehow? Yes. Yeah. Not that exclusive. I'm guessing. Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I'm guessing. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. Fascinating. This is also like sometimes you see these things. It's like I just don't understand what the brief was for this. Mm-hmm. Like. == Faber-Castell == '''Brad Dowdy:''' I actually do on this one. '''Myke Hurley:''' Okay. Go on then. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Faber-Castell doesn't play in this market. And they see Lamy being successful. Yeah. This is not Faber-Castell's thing at all. Yeah. This, this, the pin is, but everything else around this is a completely different brief than they've, than they normally work from. Yeah. Right. They're like, Lamy's doing well doing X. We should do X. And that's what I see in this. And that's not a bad thing. Like I think, obviously, I think the world of some of these Lamy products that we see in the Asian market. And I think that's what Faber-Castell is doing. I've just never seen them do this before, to your point. '''Myke Hurley:''' I just mean the specific design brief. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Mm-hmm. '''Myke Hurley:''' Of the pin? No, the sets. Oh, the sets. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This one's like a Grease theme. This one's an Amazon theme. And this one's a Sahara theme. Mm-hmm. It's like, I just don't. And they're like, oh, it's like a journey of color, the world in the palm of your hand. Like, I just, I don't understand. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Like, it's just. It's a, it's a color. Like, it's a color. I guess, yeah. They've made these colors. The sunlight. It's like, yeah. This one's kind of desert-y. The desert, yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' This one's kind of blue. And this one's green. It's like, okay. Yeah, I guess there's just like. I mean, it's. Maybe what I'm tripping on is it's so, it's really basic. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yes. So Lamy will do it very specific character matching. Where this is very generic. Yeah. I will agree with you on that. Yes, you're not wrong. Yeah. I totally see that. So anyway, these are, it's just great. This is going to be like, this is like a $70 pin. Yeah. Compared to the kimono. Yeah. Which I actually think is fine for, for like all of the kit and everything. Not that I want the kit part. I just want the pin. But I don't know. This is, this caught me off guard from Faber-Castell, who I don't see just playing around with this stuff. And I like it. I am here for it. '''Myke Hurley:''' All right. So I was like, oh, let's look at the Mediterranean ones. And I shouldn't even look at this. I'm so hungry now. '''Brad Dowdy:''' All the meals here just look amazing. So this meal set that I clicked on is inspired by Greece, Spain, Morocco, and Italy. Maybe they work with Faber-Castell on these choices. But we have the French-style chasseur pork chop, the ginger chicken thighs, and Thai curry rice. I've had that one before. That one's amazing. Chicken Vindaloo and cumin potatoes. I need to stop looking at this and get an order in. I don't have an order in right now for Factor, but this is just out of bounds. '''Brad Dowdy:''' All right. I have one more new product that I want to discuss. I had no intention of putting this in the show notes because I don't like this pen. Oh. But then it's a Lamy pen, which we'll talk about, and they made me mad, so we have to talk about it. So this is the Lamy Logo M Plus Special Edition colors. Okay. And this color chart just came across my feed. I was like, oh, these are great colors. And, you know, there's a set of like three bright colors and a set of three dark colors. So there's six new colors for the Lamy Logo M Special Edition. It's a ballpoint. I don't care for the design of this pen, which is why I was just like, okay, whatever. Cool colors. Then I saw the names. So do neon yellow and neon pink sound familiar to you, Myke? Yeah, they had safaris. Yeah. So earlier this year, they did the safari. I'm a huge fan of the neon yellow. So they've taken this theme and then they added in a neon orange. And now I'm just angry. Neon orange. Why is there not a safari neon orange? That's what I needed in my life. == Lamy Safari == '''Myke Hurley:''' Right? Like if they've added the safari colors to a different pen, it's likely that they will add that color to other pens. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Right? It just seems backwards. The safari is usually the leader. Right? That's out front. And now we have... Because they use these same stupid naming conventions where it's neon yellow, all one word, all lowercase. Right? And neon orange is right there with them. I'm going to have to buy this stupid Lamy logo that I don't even like because it's neon orange. And just be frustrated that I don't get a safari in this. They better come clear with a safari in neon orange or we're going to have issues. They have one year from today, Lamy. You're on the clock. '''Myke Hurley:''' Is this a hostage situation? '''Myke Hurley:''' I am so mad at this. I don't think I want to be a part of this. You must meet my demands. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Or else I will like your pens even more. Dang it. I will continue to buy them. '''Brad Dowdy:''' On your head be it. So, anyway, this entire group of colors is great. Like, this is the Lamy boutique lineup that crushes. Right? When you get the normies seeing the Lamy boutique pen, walking into a Lamy boutique, seeing these colors, not only can you get the three bright ones, they have anthracite, dark dusk, and aubergine, all of which look spectacular. Yep. You see these on the counter. I don't know how much these are, but let's say they're $16. I mean, who's not buying one of these when you walk into, like, the Lamy boutique? Like, for sure. So, yeah. I just, I really don't like the design of this one. I don't like the ridge grip. The plastic ridge grip on this is just too aggressively bad for me. And the clip is, like, chunky. And I don't like it. But I'm getting neon orange. So, there you have it. Lamy still, at the end of the day, Lamy still wins. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's frustrating. Neon orange. You can't just put neon orange out there like this. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I'm angry. '''Myke Hurley:''' I think it's going to happen. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I hope so. I mean, they have a year, so. You have one year. '''Myke Hurley:''' 365 days from today. '''Brad Dowdy:''' The pin is in your court, Lamy. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yes. It absolutely is. == Planner Season == '''Brad Dowdy:''' All right. Last little bit of chat today. I got a question from my friend, Lisa. Talking about, hey, it's planner season. Uh-oh. And we always talk about stuff. But can we talk about actually how we use these things and how that's been going? Can we talk about our journaling and creative habits? Not what we're using, but how we're using things, what we're using the things for. Okay. And she hit me right in a spot of bother in that I'm in that. This is a couple of times a year, if not three times a year issue for me of how I capture. '''Myke Hurley:''' Okay. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Right. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So, yeah, I got to thinking about that. And I have gone back and forth 8,000 times over the entirety of this podcast about my daily mobile capture. Right? Not at my desk, but my on-the-go. I've used field notes. I've used slightly larger notebooks. I've carried around like an A5 notebook with me all day long. When I'm away from my desk, I've used my phone in either like the Drafts app for iOS. If you have an Apple device, it's a great app. Or I've used Apple's Journal app. And nothing has ever stuck for that. Like, I'm good on planner. '''Myke Hurley:''' What kind of things are we talking about? Like, what are you capturing? What's being... '''Brad Dowdy:''' Like, thoughts and ideas. Okay. Stupid stuff. Yeah. Things I want to work on. You know, things I need to think about for my Japan trip. Or just, hey, maybe some new idea I want to write about for the blog. Or, you know, maybe just like something random about like something at the grocery store. I mean, like anything. Like, I'm talking like one sentence type capture stuff, right? Not like sitting down and writing like pages of concepts and ideas and brainstorms. I'm talking about like one sentence. Maybe it's a song. Maybe it's a quote. And all that stuff I've always... My brain doesn't stop. And so sometimes I get hung up on like thinking about the same thing over and over again. And then never let it go into, you know, outwards into one of my analog tools. Which is what they're perfect for. Or even a digital tool in the form of like a day one or the journaling app. Just like a running brain but on paper. Just to get rid of some stuff and to think about some stuff. Have some ideas. And I don't know. It's... I think that's the kicker, right? Is there's not a defined rule. Other than it's not the things that I have on my desk. Being my planner, my five-year journal, and things like that. Non... It doesn't mean I can't capture work stuff. But I'm not sitting at work, if you will. And I'm having thoughts about... It could be work. It could be fun. It could be play. It could be tasks. So... I'm going to go back to... One that's probably worked the best over the years. Two things have worked the best for me. The Apple Journal app, which is not going to be the one. And a Field Notes. And I'm going to... I just opened up a Field Notes last night. And we're going back into it today. You know, I have the... What are the Popsicle ones called? Paletas? Yeah. You know, the ones I redid the subscription for. I don't know what flavor this is. Is this strawberry? I don't know. It looks kind of amazing. It's one of the red ones. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And then I made myself cackle. Myke, I did not intend to do this. And I was thinking about what pen I wanted to clip on here to carry around. So I'm just going to put this in my pocket. Right? And just have it. And whenever I need to write something down, I'm just going to write it down. Oh, doodling also. Like, I like... Sometimes I like to just think and doodle. Right? Like, to your point of during the podcast, you were doodling. So there's a lot of pens I could use for this. And then I went, oh, I think I want to use this Jetstream Pure Malt ballpoint because I eventually want to review it. And I didn't realize it at the time. I have actually made a Popsicle stick because this is a wooden pen. And now it's with the Popsicle notebook. And I've actually made a full Popsicle. So that's what I came up with. I'm going to have to take a picture of it. That was a happy accident. And now I'm all in on, like, the Popsicle aspect of this carry kit. So this was a long way of saying is I don't have it figured out, man. I've been doing this a long time. And I still struggle with how I want to capture things. And it's just... It's the brain dump capture stuff. Yeah. I can do all the writing. I can do all the planning. I'm good at all that stuff. It's the stuff that's taking up space in my brain. And most of it good, honestly. That just needs, like, a place to go. And then I might want to refer back to it later because going back and checking those things kind of, like, triggers other thoughts and other things. And it helps me think of new ideas. Like, yeah, I don't know. That's just... That's where I'm perpetually at. And a few times a year this comes up to me is that I don't feel satisfied in capturing my thoughts. So, that's me. Did you have any thoughts on this? '''Myke Hurley:''' I'm not in the same spot that you're in. Like, I don't have a place where I'm unsatisfied, maybe. I think unsatisfied is the wrong word. Like, I have the things that I want. It's just me is the problem. Sure. Right? So, like, the products that I have available to me are the products that I want to have available to me. I'm happy with the suite of tools that I have to do my journaling. I am being inconsistent right now. So, I think that's the feeling that I'm having where it's less of a I'm missing something and more of a it's a me problem. And it's a strange thing that just happens to me sometimes. Like, when I'm really busy, like, I've got a lot of stuff going on. If I have, like, some kind of, like, significant kind of change to my daily life, good or bad, and right now it's good, but the good is causing a lot of extra work, it significantly disrupts my journaling habit. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, I'm nodding my head vigorously. '''Myke Hurley:''' Which is very strange because it's like these are the times where I should have, and I do have more to say, but, I mean, this is probably a symptom of a problem with me where I'm more likely to fill time with work than I am with time for something for me. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I'm laughing because this is so familiar right now. And this is maybe the problem, maybe goes back, not to, I'm totally interrupting you, but, like, maybe this is actually the core of my issues right now. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. And so, it's like, this is the reason that I developed this, like, hybrid system when Sophia came along, right, of quick journal capture in day one and then copying it into a notebook of some description, a journal of some description. I used two different journals. There's one I, unfortunately, still cannot talk about. At this point, I have no idea when. '''Myke Hurley:''' I used these two different journals for my journaling, and I will write it out. But, like, at the moment, I haven't even been doing the digital capture because, like, I'm in this stage right now where, like, I'm working, you know, from the morning until late afternoon, like, early evening. Or, like, you know, I get, say I'm home at, like, 7 or 8 p.m. And then I do what I got to do for family stuff. And then at 11 p.m., I get my laptop out again for a little bit. You know, so it's like I don't, that's just where I am at this time. And so the idea of me being able to find that space to sit down and journal, it just isn't happening right now. And I know it will again. I just need to get my hands around my work schedule right now because it's changing a lot. And so I need to understand where these little moments fit amongst all of that other stuff. So this happens. And I'm just in, it's been a long time since I've been in this kind of flow of work. Yeah. Where I've had, like, this big significant shift. And so, yeah, I'm just trying to get my head around it again. But the commonplace book stuff for Designing California, that's what this is about, by the way. It's like the new podcast project that I'm doing. And it's a lot of work. It's very detailed. Yeah. And so many of the things are different. And we're learning, like, every day we're learning that there's a different thing that we could or should be doing. You know, we're really trying to, like, understand how to produce this thing to the quality level that we want to produce it at. And it's just, like, an ongoing thing. '''Myke Hurley:''' But I have the commonplace book, right? And I'm starting to realize where it fits best in the podcast production, which is, like, when I'm editing the show because I listen back through. We have audio editor Jim. Jim, who edits episodes of this show when I'm away or you have a guest. So Jim will chip in here. But Jim also edits Designing California. And he then gives me back an edited version, which I then re-listen to. And I make tweaks for content purposes and stuff like that or just, like, things that I want to be a little bit different in the final episode. And that kind of work requires me to be listening. And I can't really do anything else while I'm listening. And so I've actually found that is, like, a perfect time for me to have the commonplace book. And I write down quotes of things that we say in the show or little ideas or do little doodles and stuff like that. And so that keeps me, like, actively, more actively engaged with what I'm listening to. So that's actually started to come together really well because, like, I knew I wanted to do this. But then there was the having the idea and then the working out how to implement it has been a little tricky. Like, when am I using this? Like, I tried having it with me when I was recording, but that didn't work because I had to really focus. And so, yeah, it works perfect for the editing period. So I'm doing that right now, my general journaling. It's fallen by the wayside a little bit. But I know it will pick up again because I've been in this spot before. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Yeah. It's very, very, we're very similar right now in how things go. And this happens all the time. And I've talked about it before. It's like the busier you are, the more important these tools are and the less you use them because you're so busy. It's this weird conundrum that we're in. So, yeah, that's great. So we'll figure it out. We'll always figure it out. We always want to hear how y'all use things and how you get through these seasons in life, man. It's up and down all the time. So, yeah, figuring this stuff out is always fun to talk about. '''Myke Hurley:''' Is that it for today? I think that's it for today. All right. If you want to find the show notes for this week's episode of the show, it's really easy to do that. It should be in your podcast app of choice. But if for some reason it isn't, as I say, get a different podcast app. Also go to relay.fm slash penaddict slash 734. I would like to thank Enigma Stationery and Factor for their support of this week's episode. If you want to find Brad online, go to penaddict.com, spokedesign.com, twitch.tv slash penaddict. If you want to find me, actually, go check out Design in California. If you have any interest in technology or history or any of that kind of stuff, I think you'll enjoy it. You can go to design.fm. It's where you find the audio. We're also on YouTube as well. And the YouTube video is really nice, too. We're doing a lot of work on that. We're trying to make that a lot better, too. So you can go check that out. But until next time, oh, stjude.org slash relay as well. Go donate. Go donate. stjude.org slash relay. But until we're back next week. Until then, say goodbye, Brad. Goodbye, Brad. Bye. [[Category:Podcast Transcripts]] [[Category:The Pen Addict Podcast Transcript]]
