Today's show is brought to you by Squarespace and Pen Chalet. My name is Myke Hurley. I'm joined by Brad Dowdy. Hi, Brad. '''Brad Dowdy:''' What's up, Myke Hurley? How are you doing? '''Myke Hurley:''' I'm good. I'm feeling very good today. Happy to be here. == Stationery Fest == '''Brad Dowdy:''' Good. Yeah, I'm feeling good too. We have some fun stuff to talk about today. I'm always excited to talk stationery. This is, you know, the week after travel is always tough, like for me, just so you're always catching up, you feel behind. Now this is the week after the week after travel. I feel like I'm actually able to get some work done, so I'm excited to get into it today. Cool. Sounds good. Yeah, except I want to talk about last week already. '''Myke Hurley:''' All right. We've still got some stuff we need to clear out from stationery first. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yes. Yeah. Two quick topics. One that I want to jump right into is the category at Stationery Fest that was called a spacewalk. Because I think a lot of people didn't understand what that was, either online or even at the event, which Myke and I did not have a clear idea of what it is. And luckily, we just happened to walk into a spacewalk. So it's a dedicated area. And I'll explain why in a minute. At Stationery Fest, separate ticket. And just happened to run into Neil from Yoseka. And Neil was just like, hey, great to see you guys. Because I hadn't seen Neil all of it. And I was like, Neil, I need a minute. Can you explain what a spacewalk is to us? So he spent five or ten minutes discussing it. And I think, and you can correct me or jump in here, in the short version that I want to have today, it's essentially a collective of vendors and makers from Japan put together by Tono and Limbs, by Tono at Tono and Limbs, who runs this collective. And they all kind of move together in Japan to various events. So let's say... '''Myke Hurley:''' Probably in Asia, too. It might not just be Japan. But yes, they're all kind of in the same collective. They go to different stationary shows, trade shows, and they go together. They don't sell together. They're individual vendors. But they all go to the same shows together. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. And I don't have the exact number. But for this conversation, let's say that's 20 vendors. Okay, that's probably in the ballpark. You know, it's somewhere in the teens, I think, just looking at that room. That group works together to attend these events to travel together and support each other when they're traveling. Because like a lot of them, we had learned like this time, some of this was their first time in the US. '''Myke Hurley:''' One person hadn't left Japan before. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, one person had left Japan before. So it's a way for this group of small makers, vendors, retailers to have their own built-in support system. So why is it ticketed differently? I'm still a little bit unsure why, number one, and that it needs to be number two. I feel like I have a good feeling of that. I feel like I have a good feeling of that. They wanted a more controlled space for this group. '''Myke Hurley:''' There was a concern that the throngs of people that were at Stationery Fest may have been a little overwhelming, especially because the clientele are different in personality. Just like the general average personality of the American consumer is felt to be very different from the Japanese consumer. And there was a concern that unleashing the full 10,000 people may have been a little overwhelming for people who are used to something very different. But it seemed as the weekend went on that that feeling was not accurate as they kind of opened up a spacewalk and allowed more people in than were coming in at certain times. But I think it was out of an abundance of caution, I think, is why they set it up this way. That's fair. And it also felt like it was testing the waters. Like if this worked, then maybe more could be done in the future. That was the sense that I got from the explanation we received. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And that reminds me, and this is to your point, that the category of product a lot of them were selling were a more dedicated one-on-one conversation needed to be had. So having 20 other people surrounding the table while you're trying to sell a $2,000 glass nip pen, that's an extreme version, but there was one. But to my point, while trying to sell very specific products or trying to sit at the Toto and Limbs mixing table, it gets a little bit overwhelming. So we'll see what the future holds for like the Spacewalk Collective is still going to be their thing, and they might change the name. The name doesn't really define anything, right? It's from Tono and Limbs, and they're just doing fun things, right? So that was their theme, and they might change the theme, but it doesn't really mean anything. But again, it's like this kind of collective that goes together. And it helps some of these vendors, like you said, who've never left Japan before, feel comfortable coming to other areas. '''Myke Hurley:''' They literally traveled all together. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Stay all together. Traveled all together. Stay all together. Yeah. You know, get rooms, you know, adjacent to each other so they can have the built-in support systems that, you know, allow them to do this for the first time. So it's interesting. I will see what the future holds like as far as like a stationary fest or something like that for this group. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And yeah, I don't know. I just wanted to bring that up because we didn't cover that. I think we just mentioned the area and passing. But I wanted to kind of say what we learned about it and still, you know, still have questions, you know, generally. But I at least got a better grasp of it now and what they're trying to accomplish on the spacewalk side and on the event side. So outside of that, we did meet Ryder Carroll. We did meet Ryder Carroll. We totally forgot. That was on my notes. And then we totally, we ran out of time last week. We went so long. So Ryder Carroll, if you don't know, is the creator of the Bullet Journal. And of course, Myke and I like to say we talked to him in the before times when there was only a website that he made. We don't like to say it. That is true. We do. We do say it. We do say it. But that was like I've talked to him over Zoom many times, like not face-to-face in person, but face-to-face, you know, online. We've interviewed him, I don't know, several times on the podcast. It's been many years since we interviewed him. So it was great to actually meet him in person. And we didn't know he was going to be there until we finished our panel that had Leuchtturm on it. And they said, yeah, and Ryder, they just mentioned they didn't know our relationship with Ryder. Matt from Leuchtturm had no clue. And I was like, wait a minute. He's going to be here? I was like, okay, let me explain like how we first met Ryder. And he's like, oh, no way. And so, yeah, we got to go meet Ryder. We have a fun picture. The picture is kind of funny. I don't know if you noticed this, Myke, when you look at the picture. It looks like a Ryder Carroll cutout. '''Myke Hurley:''' Oh, my God. Why does it look like that? '''Brad Dowdy:''' I think because he's in all black and everything else is white. And he's in the middle. '''Myke Hurley:''' That is so funny. I had not noticed that until this moment. The link's in the show notes. You have to go look at this Instagram photo. It absolutely looks like we're standing. Because I think it's also made worse by us holding the massive Drigafel that it makes it look like more of a posed image. And he just looks like a cutout. Oh, my God. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I can't unsee that now. Except I know he was real because we were there and we talked to him. And we, of course, got to talk to him about working with Leuchtturm and how that came to be. And he's like, oh, yeah, you guys were the reason why I do this. And we're like, yes, we know. We say that all the time. '''Myke Hurley:''' It's a story we have told many times that you suggested after an interview with him. Like, oh, you should look at Leuchtturm as maybe the collaboration partner for you. And he wasn't really that familiar with them. He looked into it, felt like it was good. And they somehow got in touch. I don't know if you had anything to do with that part. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I did not connect them. '''Myke Hurley:''' I did not connect them. But Ryder remembers that and credits it and says it in front of the Leuchtturm people who were so happy with us. It was fun. They really wanted to take pictures of us all together at that moment as well. '''Brad Dowdy:''' There were a lot more pictures following that. Like, people I don't know were starting to take pictures. I was like, okay. It was funny. So I wanted to mention that because that was left out of my notes. '''Myke Hurley:''' I was really happy that we got to finally meet him. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I was so happy, too. He was excited. We were excited. Yeah, he's a nice guy. He's a super nice guy. Yeah, super nice guy. Lastly, my next video has come out from the Yoseka YouTube feed. It's Brad's Techo Kaigi, where I go over the notebooks that I use. This came out yesterday. I watched it back. It was super fun. I really enjoyed this video. Shout out Daisy for doing this, having me on, and letting me ramble about my notebooks. We talked about the origin story of the pen addict and stuff. So it was a really good interview. You got to stand in the rain and watch this interview. '''Myke Hurley:''' I've got to be a one of two person audience for this. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yes. Yeah. And I shouted you out and also my wife, who was in the audience as well. So it was funny. That was really good. It came out nice. They do such a good job. It's fun to just talk about this stuff. And we happened to record it. == Plotter == '''Myke Hurley:''' I recommend people watch this video. But what I will tell you is if you watch this video, you're going to want to buy a plotter. That happened to Myke. Because that is what happened to me. Yeah. And I have a sad story. Oh, no. So I had spoken about wanting a new notebook that I wanted as almost kind of like a, what is it called? I always go to call it a composition notebook, but that's not correct. I've got a, what is the notebook style that I want? This like journaling style. Oh, commonplace. Commonplace. Commonplace. The problem is, so at Widgetsmith, we've just been making some composition notebook wallpapers. Oh, sure. Which is back to school time. And so I cannot get it out of my head. Yes. We're doing back to school stuff. Yeah. And so they're really fun, actually. They're available in the Widgetsmith app. And we've lined it up that you, well, we've made them so you can line them up with the time and the widgets on your home screen. So you can, it's really cute. They're available for free. Widgetsmith. I think you would like them, Brad. Oh, for sure. I would. But, so that's been mine. But yeah, so I wanted a notebook for a commonplace book, which is to really to kind of like help me chronicle some of the research and thinking I'm doing about Apple for my new podcast, Design in California. And that was like my main focus of Stationary Fest was to find a nice notebook for this. And after watching you talk about your plot there, I was like, oh, that could be really interesting because I could keep it as slim as I want. But it's also this like beautiful object. And I can, you know, file pieces away and like add papers and that kind of stuff. And so very excited. And when I bought a plotter, I got the personal size plotter, which is like a unique size, really. It's kind of like A5 in one direction, but not the other. You know, it's like tall, but skinny. There was something really important that I had forgotten, which is like the whole foundation of me creating my own stationary products. I cannot handle ring binding. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Because of your left handedness or just in general? '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, my left handedness. So. I can't write in this notebook. I'm heartbroken. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I can probably take it off your hands. But have you ever tried using it in landscape mode, Myke? Because I literally do that all the time. '''Myke Hurley:''' I'm an overhooker. '''Myke Hurley:''' There's no, there's no, I just can't make it work. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Like, so I'm using mine for show notes today. So when I get quiet, it's me reorienting my plotter as we're talking. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, no, like that is a nice idea, right? But it's, it's. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I see now. Yeah, I'm, I'm working it out here as I'm. '''Myke Hurley:''' No matter where I put my hand, it's not comfortable. And I could just write on the left side of the page. I understand that, but I just can't do that. '''Brad Dowdy:''' No, that's, this isn't designed for that. Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' So it doesn't work. '''Myke Hurley:''' That is a sad tale. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I didn't know what the sad tale was going to be. '''Myke Hurley:''' That's. I'm so sad about this. All right. Because I love this thing. It's so beautiful. And it's, it's, I just can't, I just can't do it. '''Brad Dowdy:''' All right. Bring it, bring it to Memphis and I'll see what I can do for you. '''Myke Hurley:''' Well, I said this to Adina and she suggested that maybe it becomes part of a potential raffle. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Okay. It's not a bad idea. I'm, I'm literally, like, we should talk about that soon because that's what I've been doing this week. So, like, we're, we're talking business here without y'all knowing what's going on, but it's, it's almost September where we raise money for St. Jude. '''Myke Hurley:''' I would very happily donate this. Okay. '''Brad Dowdy:''' That actually might be the way to go. Okay. So we'll talk about that. I'm so sad, Brad. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. But I've ordered something to replace it. Okay. And. Let's make it, let's turn it into a happy mic. Yes, it is because this should actually arrive today. So I'm actually very excited. And this, you will not believe what I'm about to tell you what I've ordered. What do you think I've ordered? Could you guess, listen to how excited I am. Can you guess what I have ordered to replace this? Yes. '''Brad Dowdy:''' God, you are kind of excited. Yeah. That. Oh. == Wes Anderson Notebook == '''Brad Dowdy:''' Uh, some Mont Blanc notebook. Nope. Wes Anderson Mont Blanc. '''Myke Hurley:''' Oh, man. Can you imagine? No, no, no. I'm only ever buying the pen. Brad, I am to be taking delivery of a Rotterfaden Tachenberg Leiter. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, baby. Let's go. We're running it back. We're running it back. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Run it back, baby. So that's a good call. That's the same, same, but it's, it's bigger, but it's no rings and, but it has the movable, movable parts on the inside. It's just, you have to move the entire notebook. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. But you put regular notebooks in it. I am, I'm frustrated at myself because there was some, somebody sent this in as feedback a while ago that I should look at this. Absolutely. And I don't have the person's name. Um, but the, the person who wrote in and suggested I should look at the Rotterfaden, uh, you put that in my brain and now I have it, uh, on the way. So I, it's a good call. Because what this will allow me to do. So, so the Rotterfaden Tashenberg Leiter is a product that is also, do you know how hard they are to buy now? Mm-hmm. They don't offer like a stock of them. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So just let me be clear, uh, in the U.S. we have a retailer at the Gentleman Stationer. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, there are retailers, but they only do limited releases now. That's, that's what makes it complicated. They don't have like, oh, here are our standard releases, just come by this one. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's a small batch product. Is it? Because it's, it's, it's very uniquely made and a little bit expensive, right? Just in the general sense. '''Myke Hurley:''' And all of the, the materials are always different. Like it's quite tricky to order them. Really? And like from them, you can only ever buy what the current limited is. Mm-hmm. And from retailers around the globe, you can buy different, you can buy what is left in stock of the limiteds and or any collaborations that they do with different people. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I think, yeah, I think the Gentleman Stationer like gets, Joe gets, I think. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, Joe, Joe's all out of stock. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Oh, that's the problem. He always sells out of them. Yes. He always sells out of them. '''Myke Hurley:''' I bought one from a company called Baumkuchen. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I never know how to say that. It's apparently that's a Japanese dessert. I would have thought that was German. That word, like a cake or something. But yeah, I don't know how to say it. But yes, they have had them in the past. '''Myke Hurley:''' So I bought one from them. And so basically it is a notebook cover, right? As you, as you mentioned. And you have these like. Clamps. Clamps that hold the notebook in place. And so you kind of just move them out of the way when you need to change page or whatever. But it will hold notebooks. It can hold multiple notebooks. They have pockets in them. The one that I got has a zipper in the back. Like a zip pocket. I used to use one of these a really, really long time ago to hold both a notebook and an iPad mini. And I used this thing for such a long time. Is this the one you bought? You just showed her picture. I put the one that I bought. It's a natural leather with sage. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I've never seen that natural color on any of them. '''Myke Hurley:''' So this was number 23. I actually think this was a Baumrücken collaboration with Rotofarten. Okay. So I was looking around on all of the vendors that they had to try and find like what did anybody have in stock. And this is what I went with. And they recommend a bunch of compatible notebooks. So what size is it? It's A5. A5. A5. I see it now. I have decided now that A5 is what I need to do this. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So that's what I was going to go back on the plotter. It turns out you would have done. It still would not have worked probably. But A5 would have actually been a better choice. '''Myke Hurley:''' If A5 would have been more comfortable, I still would have hit the same problem ultimately. Agree. I totally agree. I do think I went on hard mode by going for the personal just for my comfort. And again, I kind of overhook my hand. So my wrist is always in contact with the paper. Yeah. And it's like it just doesn't work for me, which is such a shame. But I think this will do better because the clamps are more, you can keep them out of the way more. I remember vividly how I used to use my notebook. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Because they only sit in the middle of the center of the notebook. '''Myke Hurley:''' And you can kind of like push them so they're flush with the page. Yeah. So you can kind of move them left or right. You won't even notice. Exactly. And I bought the Rotofar notepad because I want to see what the kind of the standard is like. They're good. Yeah. But you'll be very excited that I also bought two different compatible notebooks. I bought the MD notebook. Yeah. And the Life Noble notebook. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I mean, the two best choices, quite honestly. '''Myke Hurley:''' Oh, I know what I'm choosing. You know what I mean? Like I know where I'm going. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's like, hey, do you listen to the Fanatic podcast? I have heard it before. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Amazing choices, honestly. Yep. Yeah. Okay. So, yeah. I'm excited. I'm excited for you. Yeah. I hate. I was going to say, I hate that we had that moment. That's a pen show moment, right? That's a cautionary tale from pen shows, right? Yes. I got too excited. You get excited about this thing. And in the end, you get home and it's like, wait, I actually work differently than what I was thinking. '''Myke Hurley:''' It's not really buyer's remorse. Sure. But it is a, I, the mistake that I made was I was in the place where I could have done this, could have tested this all out, but didn't do that. I didn't take a pause, which I should have taken a pause and like thought about this and like tried them out a little bit more and stuff. But, but yeah, I decided to launch into action and turn the frown upside down and now I have this beautiful notebook on the way. Like that was, that was what I decided to, to go for. But, so I will be following up hopefully next week on this. Yes. I believe it should be, it should be delivered by today or tomorrow, but hopefully I'll be able to follow up on this soon. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna have a good time here, I think. And I'm, I mean, I've only seen images, but I love the color of this. Like it's like the natural leather and the green kind of sage. Yeah. But I am also thinking I'm going to put some stickers on this because why not? Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Their colors, their colors is what gets me, but I, I don't buy them because I know the system wouldn't work as well for me. Right. I love how they look though. And that's always the problem when I see this, see this style, I'm looking at this, like this is fantastic. And in the past, they've done some really colorful felts, you know, like my colorful notebooks and pens. They've done some, some neat with the interior. So yeah, I think they're great. And I look forward to hearing more about this. So next week's going to be an epic episode as you'll, you'll hear, you'll hear more about in the, in a few minutes. '''Brad Dowdy:''' All right, Myke, we got our shout-out of the week. Shout-out of the week. Good friend, no far at writing at large, Myke. I wanted to call out maybe their latest post or one of their most recent posts. It's called Last Page in My Sketchbook. And I would like to pose a question to you and to our listeners. Is there anything more satisfying and stationary than finishing a notebook? I'd argue it's more satisfying than finishing a refill, finishing a bottle of ink. '''Myke Hurley:''' Because it is incredibly rare, isn't it? '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yes. And I just wanted to shout-out writing at large and no far for saying, hey, finished up this sketchbook. That's a big deal. I think it's cool and I think it should be applauded. I don't care if your notebook's 10 pages or 1,000 pages. Finishing something is a big deal in our world. And I think finishing a notebook or a sketchbook in this case is like the most awesome thing. So, yeah, y'all go check out that post and think about finishing your stuff. I have one notebook that's getting down to like the last eighth and then a bunch of more new notebooks. So it's going to be a while before I finish another notebook once I finish this one little one that's just kind of like a scrap paper notebook on my desk. You know what I want to finish, Myke? Tell me all about it. The 1P Zento. Finish him! I want to finish it in like a Mortal Kombat kind of way. Yep. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So we ended, you ended last week's episode. Yep. I ended my mind with the 1P Zento discussion. And I finally have mine on the way. So when I was saying next week's going to be epic, I should have mine today or tomorrow. So between your rotor fodden and my 1P Zento discussion, next week's episode's already written. == 1P Zento == '''Myke Hurley:''' And just as a reminder, this was the bombshell that I dropped on Brad at the end of a very long episode that I have the 1P Zento and it actually comes with a pre-installed Unibull 1 refill and an additional Zento refill in the back of the packaging. Which Brad thought, I think, that I was lying. '''Myke Hurley:''' He would not believe me. Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I thought the Zento was installed. I thought the Zento was the installed refill, but it's not. '''Myke Hurley:''' And I've since done some work on the package. Like, because there's on the packaging. There's like, you know, it's in Japanese. But you can kind of see on the packaging how it references. Like, you're getting these two refills in the one package and you can decide what one works best for you. And they have different properties and that kind of thing. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to say, we could spend another 10 minutes on it right now, but I'm going to hold that thought. Because I'd rather spend 10 minutes on the Brasstown, the Notco Brasstown. '''Myke Hurley:''' Let's go, baby. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Let's go, baby. Straight. '''Myke Hurley:''' You thought he was dead? What is it? I'm mixing things up now. '''Brad Dowdy:''' What is dead may never die? '''Myke Hurley:''' Well, I was thinking of when I think I'm out, they pull me back in. I was thinking of that. Oh, yes. And then also, the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Exactly. That's where we are. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And you're not a Game of Thrones person. So that is the what is dead may never die type of thing. Okay. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, no, I'm not. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So, yeah. Mark at Rickshaw, a couple of weeks ago, we were talking. I was talking with him about I'm sold out of my Sinclair for the Pen Attic shop on Squarespace, by the way. Go to penattic.com slash shop. And we had been doing a specific color of Sinclair. And I was like, I want to do something different for the Sinclair. And I gave him some materials. And he said, okay, let me make a sample. And then, like, a few days later, I got a package in the mail from Rickshaw. And I'm just assuming it's the Sinclair sample that we were talking about making. So I literally sat on that package for, like, two or three days because I tend to do that. I get a lot of mail. And if I know what it is, I wait until I'm going to have time for that thing. So you need it. Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. So it was like, I need to spend time with this Sinclair to see if I like it. So I open it up. There's no Sinclair in there. There's this gray. What is this thing? Oh, my God. It's a Brasstown. Like, no mention of it. It just showed up. '''Myke Hurley:''' That's a pretty ball of move, I think. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. And it just sat there for, like, literally three days next to me at my desk. And I was so mad that I didn't open it up when I got it. So maybe I should rethink my process here. But anyway, Mark's, like, full sending the Brasstown. Once he got my feedback on the prototype that he sent me, I mean, it's literally, like, perfect no notes kind of thing. Yeah, he's going. And so they're going to be launching at the San Francisco Pen Show. We'll put a link in the show notes if you're not familiar with what the Brasstown is. It's an old Notco product that we designed. This is our first. This is why we built Notco to begin with was this case. Because it's a very unique style. == Pen Transport == '''Myke Hurley:''' And it came from the idea of how do you transport a bunch of pens, right? Yeah. And they're not all touching. No touching. That was very important. Right. '''Brad Dowdy:''' No touching. Right. Right. So, like, it's made very, like, considerate of those things. But it kind of messes with your head because it doesn't look like it should work. Or it doesn't look like it could hold 10 pens or something like that. '''Myke Hurley:''' It is a God-tier case. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They were, I remember how popular they were at the pen shows. Like, everything was popular from Knock, but people would go mad for these. It was the most unique. Yeah. I once remember someone saying to me, you remember when we had the blue and pink ones? The unicorn one? Mm-hmm. And I remember selling- I know exactly what you're going to say. A bunch to a lady who was like, I'm going to put my color in here. I'm like, whatever you want, lady. Yep. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I think she bought, like, five of the unicorn snot and was going to put, like, her silver, like, silverware sets in there. Whatever you want. I was like, yes, ma'am. That's totally fine. Can you give me your credit card? And she was like, yep. She was like, she just went for it. She just sent it. And I was like, yes. '''Myke Hurley:''' You know what I think? I don't know how you feel about this, but I think it might be, like, an interesting feeling for you. Like, you know, Rickshaw is such a incredible brand. And they make, you know, they make so many products and they do such a great job and their quality is so high. But they value your designs to this level. I just think that's really nice and must feel very good. Like, I know that obviously, like, in the end, NOC did not go the way that you wanted to for a bunch of reasons that were not yours or Jeff's fault. Just, like, business struggle became too difficult because of the choices that you wanted to make. Right? Like, but you couldn't scale to a Rickshaw size, which is what's needed. Right? If you're going to do this kind of thing. But the design... '''Brad Dowdy:''' Short version is they have in-house sewing. Right? Yeah. Which is not an easy... '''Myke Hurley:''' Which you tried to do and it was just too hard. Right? Like, they've just... They've been able to make it work out for them. Because if you do try to have them made anywhere else, it just becomes too expensive, which I know was the problem that you were having. You have to produce this kind of stuff yourself. But the problem was never the designs, obviously. The designs are amazing. And I just think it's so cool that this company, who can produce whatever they want, are, like, weaning to make Brad stuff because it's that good. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Yeah. I do appreciate that because, like, you know what? Like, companies can just kind of make whatever they want, right? Yeah. They don't exist anymore. But it's good to have those tie-ins and it's good. You know, I appreciate, like, Rickshaw and now Galen doing the leather version saying, hey, like, we'll do this. Can we do this and, like, you know, use the name and make these designs? Because they were popular and we want to keep them going. And I do appreciate that. So, yeah. It's cool. So, I'm looking forward to getting some Brasstowns back in people's hands who know what they are and then new people seeing the Brasstown because it hasn't been for sale for, what, five, six years at least? Yeah. So, in a new model. So, yeah. When are they coming? San Francisco pin show in two weeks. Okay. So, launch at the show, then online after that. Nice. And then I'm going to do a color for the shop. Not a fancy pattern, but I'm going to do a color. So, Mark is making some, like, the original launch colors as close as he can when we first launched the Brasstown. That's adorable. And then a bunch of other just solids, right? Solid exterior, solid interiors. And then I'm going to do a solid exterior, solid interior for the shop, but I don't want to tease that yet. It'll be a color he doesn't do. It'll be for me. So, yeah. It's good looking. I've already seen. I have that prototype coming. So, again, maybe we can talk about that next week. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Do we want to talk about kind of a remake of another product? Absolutely. Are you sure? '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, I do. I want to talk about that. I mean, look, I want to talk about it. I have some things to say. I don't know if they're good. == Namisu Gravity == '''Brad Dowdy:''' Okay. So, I put a note in the show notes. This came up on my desk, across my desk, like, a week or so ago. The Namisu Gravity Titanium Pen. By name, sounds great, right? Yeah. Sounds, oh, cool. '''Myke Hurley:''' We like Namisu here. I saw the link. And I was like, I know what this is going to be. That was my thought. I know this. I know what this is going to be. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yes. Yeah. And was it? '''Myke Hurley:''' No. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Absolutely not. I could not. '''Myke Hurley:''' There is no world. There is no amount of guesses in which this is the pen I thought I was going to see. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. I literally went, huh, is it April Fool's? '''Myke Hurley:''' It looks like an April Fool's joke. The imagery looks wrong. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So, for those who don't have a visual, we'll have a link in the show notes. It's basically a take on a pen style that has existed in the past. I think it was kind of popular in the 90s. Both Platinum and Tombow made these small, roundish. Tombow called it the egg. It looks like an egg. A fountain pen. So, if you've been in the fountain pen game for a long time, you've probably run across. I've run across the Platinum Glamour more than I see the Tombow egg. But it's the same concept. It's a very short, maybe like a two inch in length, but very round, almost ball-like. But it really is egg-shaped. And Nemisu, for some reason, has modernized this concept, honestly, in a pretty sick way. They nailed this. Like, this looks amazing. Like, I love everything about this, and I will never use this product, right? This is kind of like one of my things I like. I'll say that. I hate this pen. '''Myke Hurley:''' I hate it. I don't like anything about this. And I don't know why they've done it. Because they just made a really nice-looking pocket pen, right? So, why have they done this? '''Brad Dowdy:''' I love it. I will never use this pen. Like, this goes against everything I enjoy about holding a pen, right? Like, the way they feel, the shape, and the design. '''Myke Hurley:''' Like, so they just made the Ixion pocket, which is great, right? It's like, that is what I expect them to make. I don't, I cannot fathom why they have made this product. It doesn't make any sense to me. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. I don't know. I'm in. I'm in. Go for it. I can't. I can't. This is great. I just can't. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I can't wait to not buy it, but to see someone else's. It looks amazing. '''Myke Hurley:''' Is it like an eyedropper? '''Brad Dowdy:''' I doubt it. It's probably short international cartridges. I didn't look at the product page, but they don't have a picture on the Instagram of the thing. Oh, no. '''Myke Hurley:''' It holds up to six mils of ink in eyedropper mode. It says it in the Instagram caption. It's the only reason to use this pen. If you're just putting a regular cartridge in it, what is the point? '''Brad Dowdy:''' You know? I guess. But I got to see. So when you have metal pens, you got to make some decisions on the interior. '''Myke Hurley:''' I would like to see that. I'm not saying wherever it works or not, but I'm saying that is how they're advertising it. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. In eyedropper mode. So that means it can't. So it has a mode. If they're saying mode, they're not saying it's an eyedropper. It's saying you can't eyedropper, which means it probably fits short international cartridges. Do they have a nib picture? Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' If you buy this pen and use a cartridge in it, I need to have a conversation with you. '''Myke Hurley:''' I can't imagine this is comfortable to hold. Like, I struggle sometimes. I love, I love the Uniball 1P. Like, it's my favorite pen in a long time. I love this pen. But sometimes I hold it and I'm like, you're a chunky. Like, you're not, sometimes it can be like weird to hold. This thing, it looks like you're holding like a bar of soap or something. Yes. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's at the limit. The 1P is at the limit. This is well over the limit. '''Myke Hurley:''' And like, I really wonder like what it feels like in people's hands. Because you're not posting this, right? Like, there's no posting. There's not an option, yeah. And it's like, you kind of can't tell, I think, from the scale. But it looks really small. I, this pen, man, I, look, respect that you made it. You know? Like, you've done it. Like, congratulations to you. But I can't, I can't get on board with this one. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So I just found, so in the, go to their main Instagram link, it has the link to the Kickstarter. You have to scroll all the way. Oh, this is a Kickstarter? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You have to scroll like three quarters of the pen. I mean, you know what? '''Myke Hurley:''' It's way funded. So who am I? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who am I to say, you know? '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. So you have to scroll three quarters of the page down to actually see them holding the pen in writing position. And it actively looks terrible. That's a pretty bad image. That's why it's hidden so far at the bottom. But it'll, yeah. There's a reason why it's buried. Oh, God. '''Myke Hurley:''' That doesn't, doesn't look right to me. Oh, it's a rollerball too? '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, there's a standard. '''Myke Hurley:''' Look, I gotta say, I think, I just don't think you could get purchase on this pen. Like, I just, I just not sure you could grip it in the way that you want to, you know? Like. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I scrolled further down. And it does fit in a short international and the short international converter. '''Myke Hurley:''' Like, there's just, there's some videos of people. It's like, something positive looks like they're kind of gripping it like it's a dry erase marker. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's an egg, Myke. It's like you're literally holding an egg. Yeah. Trying to write. Just go grab an egg out the fridge. '''Myke Hurley:''' But I'm very happy it is for the hundreds of people that are backed in. I'm pleased that people want this. Because. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Oh, wait. It's convertible. So, the grip. So, the rollerball and fountain pen is the same pen. It's just a, it swaps the tip, if you will. Okay. '''Myke Hurley:''' I mean, I'm not surprised about that. That happens a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Okay. I didn't know if they were separate pens. Right. But they actually swap. I see. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, this rules. Also, it's like, I don't know. == Pocket Pens == '''Myke Hurley:''' To me, if I want, like, they call this a pocket pen, right? '''Brad Dowdy:''' Uh-huh. Uh-huh. '''Myke Hurley:''' I figure, to me, like, pocket is, like, small. Like, they took all of the length and just put it into width. Like, it doesn't feel pocketable to me. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. It's like putting a baseball in your pocket. Oh, I love the petrol one, though. Whoa, baby. It's sick. This pen rules. '''Myke Hurley:''' Okay, if you buy this pen and buy it in petrol, I forgive you. '''Brad Dowdy:''' No. You know? I'm not buying it. I'm not buying it, but the greater you. I love how they have the images with the cap posted. I don't think they have any writing images. I mean, they're showing it posting. Are they? Do they write with it posted? I see there's a picture of them showing, like, a little gif that's showing the hand posting it. Oh, yeah. I guess you can post it. But that's not going to feel balanced. No, no, no, no. So I'm looking at the writing ones, and no one has this posted. No one's using it posted. '''Myke Hurley:''' No. It's very funny that they have the, like, they're showing, like, this is how you can fill it, right? And you can use the Schmidt P8-126. So that's pretty cool. Short cartridge. Or the terrible mini Kaweco converter. Yeah, this thing sucks. Where the plunger is, like, you can fold the plunger, right, in the Kaweco one, but they're just showing it fully extended. '''Brad Dowdy:''' That's the perfect converter for this. Again, it's a genius idea that's just terrible in practice. Kind of like this pen. Yeah. '''Myke Hurley:''' I like that it exists for people that really like Kawecos and just want a converter, right? Like, you have it, and they made a clever thing to make it work. Sure. But again, like, you can see it. Like, this pen, you should be using it in the eyedropper mode. Like, that's the point. If you're not doing that, I don't know why. But yeah, look, I don't like this pen, but I respect it. And I love Nemisu. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So good luck to them. It's great. I'm going to tag this on. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Well, I guess not. I was going to say tag it on the platinum, some platinum conversation we want to have. But why don't we talk about our good friends at Red Pen Chalet first? Because it's actually a longer conversation. I kind of caught myself there. Brad, what is exciting you over at Pen Chalet right now? '''Brad Dowdy:''' So I actually want to talk about a pen I just reviewed, and that's the Novalor Original Plus. So Novalor just came out with some new colors of their original. So there's a Novalor Original, and that's a piston filler. So this is your, you know, kind of midpoint price range, clear barrel, color finials, kind of, you know, TWSBI-esque style, you know, where the center is clear. And so this is a piston filler. It's called the Original. And then the one that I recently reviewed is called the Original Plus, and it's a vacuum filler. But it's the same kind of theory. It's the same essential, essentially the same pen build, and it feels really good. These are really nice pens. I'd honestly go out to say, like, underrated pens, which doesn't happen much these days, given, like, all the price increases, which we're going to talk about later. '''Brad Dowdy:''' They're really good quality. I enjoy them. This is one of those pens, when you pick it up, kind of like when I pick up my Lamy Safari, it makes me smile, because something about it feels right in my hand. And that goes for the Original or the Original Plus, whether you want. They just released a bunch of new colors in the piston one, which is the original. So they just did some, like, violet and blue ones. They did some full transparent, like, where the full body is, like, all green, all blue. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And both of those styles just came out in the piston fill, but I got the Original Plus, which you can also get at Penn Chalet. And I could not recommend it more highly. It's one of those pens I wanted to, like, circle back on, because I reviewed it a few years ago when it came out, and I was impressed. And I always like to go back and see, you know, if those things continue as time moves on. That also goes for the Lamy LX, Myke. I didn't know the LX still existed. So they made one a few years ago. I think it was called Maroon. That wasn't Maroon. That was Maroon. It was kind of like a brown. Maroon. But Maroon. So the LX is basically your upgraded All-Star. Yeah. So they've taken the aluminum barrel All-Star and added, like, metal finials. They added a colorized, like, in this case, matching clip. So it's just like a fancied up. They gave you the black nib with the gold trim on it, right? So it's just kind of like the All-Stars upscale model, right? '''Myke Hurley:''' Did we talk about this one last week? '''Brad Dowdy:''' We did when they released it, but I haven't seen them for sale yet. So they just came out, and they're now available over at our Friends at Penn Chalet. So, yeah, go check those out, and then go check out some of the inks to fill these pens up with. So they carry some of my favorite brands of inks, like Wearing Old, Dominant, and they do some really cool, unique in-store, or store-exclusive, I should say, ink colors. So go check those out. '''Myke Hurley:''' That's by going to penchalet.com slash penaddict to get 10% off anything at Penn Chalet and also see some exclusive offers. Our thanks to Penn Chalet for their continued support of this show and Relay. == Platinum Prices == '''Brad Dowdy:''' All right. I want to spend a few minutes talking about Platinum Pen here. Do you want the good news first or the bad news first? '''Myke Hurley:''' Can I give you some good news of my own? Sure. I just got a shipping notification that the Rotterdam has arrived. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Oh, sick. Man. So, yes, we're definitely on for next week. All right. So what do you want from me, good news or bad news? '''Myke Hurley:''' Let's start with the bad news. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Platinum is raising their prices again, Myke. Real bad. Like, you have got to be kidding me right now. I mean... Like, I was... I found this out yesterday. This has apparently been out for a few days. I just got told about this yesterday. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And it's extreme. Yeah. And this is the company that raised prices twice last year. More of an across-the-board price raises last year. This one is a little bit more specific. But it's sure not pretty. It is, like... Like, I mean, numbers you never see in price increases. And this is following two price creases in the span of six months last year. So they just released a new product, Myke. The 3776 Travia. So that's the one with the more flexy soft nib. It's a beautiful pen. It's like this all-black pen. And this is... They released the Travia right after the second price increase last year. Yeah. Right? So they've released... They've... Did all their price increases. Like, in the fall. They released this new product called the Travia. And it's expensive. Right? It goes into the new price category. And it was like $550, $590. Something like that. And then already, six months later, or eight months later, I guess. Or maybe a little bit longer, but you get the picture. Up 67% for this pen. And that's... This whole list is like that. The 3776 Nice in Oshino. '''Brad Dowdy:''' The prices are up 60%. Right? These are the 3776 Special Editions. Right? But they'd make a lot of them. Right? So you have your standard 3776, say like a Chartres Blue. And then when they do the limited to 3776 numbered ones. Those are up 60%. '''Myke Hurley:''' This is insane. 60% is a huge price increase when it's already on an additional price increase. Yeah. Like what... Do you remember roughly like the percentage increases of the last ones? '''Brad Dowdy:''' They were both... It was like 40, then another 40. So this is the third one? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my God. In like 12 months. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And then like they have a few others listed. Like the Kanazawa Goat Leaf Pens up 51%. 3776 celluloids up 43%. This is insane. This is... This is wild. This is... This like actually makes my jaw hit the floor. I don't know what to say about this. Because like when you look at the Travia, which is literally a brand new pen. '''Myke Hurley:''' Maybe I'm wrong. But a pen that started at $300. If it went up 40% and then up 40% again and then up 60% is $950. '''Brad Dowdy:''' We'll have to see. That may not be right. So we'll see. '''Brad Dowdy:''' So yeah, I don't know if it was exactly that. So it could have been a smaller... One of those first numbers could have been smaller on the first jump. But the problem was those first two numbers came within like four months of each other. It was like we got a price increase. And they're like, whoops. Big price increase. Psych. And so we'll see what this... And what are they saying? I don't feel good. '''Brad Dowdy:''' I will tell you. They are saying until now we have worked to keep our prices as stable as possible through business streamlining and improvements in production efficiency in order to meet our customers' expectations. However, the prolonged increases in the cost of raw materials, production materials, energy, and logistics have made it extremely difficult to maintain current prices through our own efforts alone. Therefore, we now charge more. Respectfully, Platinum. This is a company that's in a bad way. I have a feeling. Like, I... The... Like, look. We all get price increases. Right? We all understand that this has to happen. '''Myke Hurley:''' It's happening all over the place. '''Brad Dowdy:''' How Platinum has dealt with this is frightening from a business perspective. Yep. Literally, I'm looking at a Reddit comment, which I hadn't read any before, which don't read the comments. But literally, the first comment is, LMFAO, they just did a 40% increase six months ago. So, yeah, it's like, it's brutal. '''Brad Dowdy:''' You know, a little over a year ago, I'd say probably a year ago, you could get a Platinum 3776, a basic one, for like $180 to $220. '''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And now that pin's probably like $400 or $500. So, it's pretty wild. With all that said, can I give you some good Platinum news? Please. And maybe this is the future. And maybe they're just going to have to rethink what they're doing. I received a pin called the Platinum Kimono, K-O-M-O-N-O, last week from a friend. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And just so happens, Jacob, our good friend over at FoodayFan, who stays on top of this stuff, did a video of this exact pin that I have. And I did learn a little bit about Platinum from Jacob's video. Y'all should go watch it. Because I had never seen this pin before it arrived on my desk. And looking at it, you can't really find much on it. But apparently, and Jacob goes through this in his review, Platinum has a Chinese subsidiary, which I'm guessing means like base and factory in China, that they built this pin for the Chinese market. And it's available on like AliExpress, right? So I couldn't find any retailer to get this pin from. So what this is, is a Platinum fountain pin using the nib that we're all familiar with in the Preppy and Prefonte and Plazier, those type of nibs, like their entry-level nib. In a small metal barrel pin. So the cap and barrel are metal. And then the grip section is like the same type of Platinum Preppy type of plastic clear translucent grip section. But it's a metal pin. It's short like a Kaweco Sport. It posts, the cap posts, you kind of have to have the cap to post to write with it to make sure it's the right length. It's just fantastic. And I guess this is the problem that Platinum's trying to solve. You go, I watched Jacob's video and the pin was $15 on AliExpress. When I got, opened mine up last week, we went and found it on stream. It was only like $9.70. It's like a $10 pin. '''Brad Dowdy:''' And so in that context, this is an amazing freaking pin, right? It's just unbelievably good. All of Platinum's like low-level pins are good. What can they do? Can they do more in this space? Because like even the packaging they did, you'll have to go watch Jacob's video because I haven't taken any videos or pictures of mine yet. And I got the same packaging. The packaging is like way out of hand for like a $10 pin. Like it looks like, you know when Retro 51 did like the Winnie the Pooh stuff and they had these nice boxes and stuff? It looks like a Winnie the Pooh box or like a Peter Pan box. It's like stylish and nice and fancy. Yeah. It's really pretty. '''Myke Hurley:''' And it feels like they kind of, they needed to make a box because they have to set up the cartridges because the cartridges are non-standard. '''Brad Dowdy:''' Yes. That is the one decision I question here. is I don't understand making the pins so short that they had to design a shorter cartridge to fit it. So the connection's the same, right? So like the Platinum opening is the same. The, where you're connecting the cartridge or converter to the feed is the same. But the length of this cartridge is shorter to fit in the barrel. They could have made this like a quarter inch longer and it would have still been a short pin and fit their standard. I don't understand that decision. But to your point, they made this box because they had to give you cartridges because none of the Platinum stuff's going to fit it. Which is a little bit strange, which also tells me that we're not going to see, I kind of, that kind of makes me think we're not going to see like a wide release for this, like a global release. That they're going to just stick with what they've got here. And I, and I don't get it because this is, so if I was guessing and this pin came to like the European or the American market, it's probably like, like in the 25 ish dollar range would be my guess. And I don't know why it's not because it's easily worth that. It would be very cool for people to have, you know, no one's buying an $800 Travia, right? But could you sell, you know, a bunch of these and do something? I don't know, survive. I don't know. It's a fantastic pin. It's just, it's just great. And it's just not easy to get. Like there's no, I haven't reviewed it yet. I don't know if and when I'm going to review it because it's hard to just link to AliExpress. Like I don't mind doing it and you can buy it from AliExpress, go for it. But like when I'm doing a product review, I want to make it a little bit easier for people to buy or people who are taking a chance do something more comfortable with like, you know, a traditional retailer. Even if that retailer is. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I don't mind doing it. But it's like I do tend to want people to have easy options or like, you know, from a retailer or whatever. But we'll see. I don't know. This is one to watch because it is legitimately good. Jacob raved about it. I would rave about it myself. I was listening to Jacob's video and it's like he's based essentially like the exact same words I would use to describe this in very glowing terms. Like it was a perfect like review. Like I agreed like literally 100% with everything he said. The cartridge decision is a little bit weird. And I would just like to see it in more places. That's all. I like platinum just needs to send this one around the world and it would do very well. And it could be like a platform pen that once or twice a year they do a new color or they do a pattern on it. Right. But they've done that with like the preppy. Right. Where they have the basic preppy. Then they did like the whole preppy wah series. Right. And I don't know. But it's weird to talk about this pen so glowingly when I just talked about like what are they even doing like with these prices. And I get you know a lot of it's not in their control but like something's up. '''Brad Dowdy:''' It's not a good look in the big picture. But then they sneak out the small entry level pen that could just be like right up there with the Kaweco Sport and popularity. So it's great. So if you can get it get the platinum kimono and you'll enjoy it. It's just a great quality platinum pen which everything they make is so which is unfortunate why the higher end stuff is just off off the charts now.
