I just sat down, watched WrestleMania, and I was good to go, man. Like, that was kind of all I needed on that day. But yeah, and then it was like a long flight, but it was good, because I got some sleep on the plane. So I actually, I wasn't, and I haven't been like jet lagged, tired, just like jet lag disorientated, I would say is the way that I am right now. But if you are listening to this, and you're thinking, hey, where's the live episode, because we do release these rather closer together than usual. It's episode 353. '''Myke Hurley:''' So they were doing some incredible camera judo. It's good that they're brothers, right? Because they're able to work together, right? Like in a nonverbal way, they could just understand each other. It was kind of funny. At one point, Stephen texted me and he's like, look, don't want to worry you, but I just want to know how long you've got left.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, so I'm cribbing off Myke's iPad for the show notes, and then all of a sudden texts start coming in. And I didn't read the text because I didn't want to stare at the iPad while I was on camera. But I was like, hmm, that's interesting.

'''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah, so this was a new technical thing that we dealt with. But there was no problem with the video. There might be more cuts than usual towards the end. We'll see. Yeah, it turned out to be that case. But we have some other stuff, including some interesting follow-up. So a couple of weeks ago, Brad had a fever dream and asked the question, Can a Lamy Safari be arushied? Can you arushi a Lamy Safari? Well, can you?

'''Brad Dowdy:''' We're going to find out. That's the experiment that Jonathan Brooks of the Carolina Pen Company, he has accepted the task. He has a Lamy Safari from me and a Lamy AL Star from Anna, and he's going to see what happens. Like, he's going to test this out to see if it works. Even if it does work, I'm not sure it's a good decision. You know, it may work. Like, I could arushi my finger, but that's probably a bad idea, right? So we're going to check this out and see what happens. You know, I'm just – I think he's got a lot of prep work to do before he even starts on, like, the lacquering process. So I think if we can actually make it to the lacquering process, we're probably to the good. But I'm a little bit concerned that we will even get there with either of these pen models.

'''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. I had a really good conversation with Jonathan about how your rushi stuff. Like, he was showing me some pens that he was working on, like, some stuff that, like, he'd been given, like, put a rushi on this, right? Like, not just the Lamy Safari, but some other stuff. And I was, like, talking to him, like, how do you not interrupt, like, the feed – not the cap. Like, what the – I always forget the name of the rings that the cap screws onto. Threads. Yeah, threads. How do you not, like, interrupt that stuff? Like, how do you build up smoothly, right? Like, onto the pen so, like, it's not just this harsh drop-off. So it was really interesting to talk to him. If he manages to do this in however long it's going to take him to do it, we have to have him back on the show to talk about it. Because I think it will be fascinating. Like, I'm really intrigued to be, like, how does he deal with the ink window? Right.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Right. So – Yeah, like, we were looking at where the – on the Safari where the cap connects is, like, the only physical contact point from the cap to the barrel. And as we were going over that, it was like, well, we'll just have to leave it kind of natural or else the cap will never see. You know, and the layers, you know, change diameters. You know, like, are things going to fit as they used to? So, yeah, it's an ordeal. Like, this is just one of those weird things that happened. And Jonathan's up for testing stuff out like this, which is – I mean, it's work for him, but it's fun for me. So I'm on the board.

'''Myke Hurley:''' It was fun to – I was like – I was asking him, like, well, how are you going to do it? And he's like, I don't know yet. We'll see. And I, like, I really like that. He had a great show, too. It looked like his table was completely swarmed the whole time for good reason. Yep. But you are a weirdo and offered up quite the safari for sacrifice.

Anyway, the main name that I saw online was Griso, G-R-I-S-O. What the real – this is such an old model and such a rare model that I couldn't find much information on it. So, yeah, I – but this is one of my most used safaris. Like, this is practically like my beater safari that I use more than any other safari. So why shouldn't I use this one?

'''Brad Dowdy:''' I just find it interesting. Well, but now you're going to lose all of that, right? No. It's still under there. I still know what it is. It's still special to me. You know, I – like, the Chartreuse ones or all those other limited editions that came out all at the same time, those are boring. Like, and then I like the Smurf one, you know, the blue one with the red clip. I don't want to hide that one. I enjoy using that one. Right. And it looks good as it is. The Griso Grey is actually pretty boring. In general, it just happens to be considered one of the rare ones. Like, there's – you know, like, I wouldn't do it to, like, a terracotta orange or, you know, the original green, whichever the green that came out at the same time as terracotta. I'd never do that. But this one's just kind of like in this no man's land of safaris. And I use it. I like it. And, you know, it's cool. Like, I wasn't – for some reason, I had no interest in giving him, like, a petrol or a dark lilac. Not that I wanted to keep them. It just didn't seem interesting enough. Like, this – I don't know. It seemed like the right choice to me.

'''Myke Hurley:''' There was a little thing I saw rolling around some tables during the Pen Show, which was a pair of orange six-sided die. What's that all about?

'''Brad Dowdy:''' So, we also did a thing where we tempted Mr. Brooks to make some dice out of acrylics just as a tester because we, at Nock, have been asked to make dice bags for years and years and years, which are a very, you know, reasonably simple thing to manufacture. Just make them in Nock style. I was like, well, if we're going to do dice bags, we need some cool dice to go along with them. Hey, Jonathan, you know these, like, the extra acrylic you have laying around that's probably waste. Can you make some dice out of it? So, I saw him, I think, Thursday night. He reached in his pocket and handed me a pair of dice. So, he said, you know, it's his first pass at them. They're, you know, a little rough around the edges, he knows. But they're so good. I kept them in my pocket all weekend long. It's kind of like now just kind of like my pocket fidget toy. So, they're very cool. We'll see if this becomes a thing. I want it to. That would be great.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, so I don't know, you know, what the steps are to make, like, D20s and things like that. I think that could be, you know, nightmarish for the hardware that he actually has. But this is at least a reasonable start and something that might be possible.

'''Myke Hurley:''' I am more interested in you making me a dice bag than dice, though. Right? Because, like, what I want is a really nice dice bag. Like, the dice is, like, you definitely should do it. But, like, just me personally, I have a bunch of really nice dice. Like, the little kind of treatment. The reflective treatment. Yeah. On his, the registration was off.

'''Myke Hurley:''' Yeah. It didn't line up perfectly. It wasn't by a lot. But, like, you could see it. But on mine, it's perfect. I love this edition. And one set has already gone to a D&O. I was like, oh, that looks great. I was like, good. Take one. Right. Because I don't need two sets of them. Yeah. I think this is just a true classic Field Notes. Big, big fan.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. Like, you wrote, like, impressions. Like, in the show note. And I said, really great, super traditional, everything I want Field Notes to be. Right. It's not going to be everyone's favorite edition. It'll know. It probably won't be in, like, top 10 all time. But it's just a really strong Field Notes edition. Like, it's what they do best, in my opinion. This is a very me edition because I am more of a traditionalist. And generally, they manufacture that way. But I just felt like, I don't know, it was just a very strong edition. I'd love it. So I used mine for a few days the weekend before the pen show. I was at an all-weekend baseball tournament. So that was my notebook. Carried it in my back pocket. Boiled up well. Does really good with pencils and ballpoint, which is what I used it for.

'''Myke Hurley:''' That map is killer. It looks like the London Tube map. Yeah. Basically. Which is so beautiful. And it's also got, like, a bunch of games on it and cool information. I need to really look into it a little bit more than I did. But that map is super cool.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. It's really cool. Like, Van S at the show was selling maps as a standalone. Like, they were able to order just, like, maps as a standalone product.

I probably shouldn't say more than every effort was made to do it as legally and safely as possible, given our resources and time frame. That is, honestly, I would be happy with that as the full answer.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' I will say it was a real and very, very large sign on a real road with that exact message on it. And everyone driving by saw it. We figured if a field nut drove by, no one would believe them. And if they took a cell phone photo, it would have glitched because of the refresh rate. Ha ha. So he sent us a picture of them, actually, you know, before the sign was in full functionality. I guess, you know, they would have to film it to maintain the refresh rate. So it was a great, I mean, that's what I expected, right? It was like, Brian's up to something and he's only going to tell you so much. And that's how he leaves it. So it's pretty great, right?

Myke, were you aware of this before I mentioned it to you? No. Yeah, it didn't seem to be making much news in our circles because it's not a huge increase, although it kind of is. Like what I want to let me read the details, the short version of this. Let's see.

'''Myke Hurley:''' Sailor Pens has just announced its first across the board price increase in many years, with new prices going into effect on April 15th. There's roughly 10 to 15 percent price increases across their product line.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' OK, I mean. 10 percent, 15 percent. So what the pro gears are like 200 to 20. Yes. And the slims are like 140 ish. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. Um.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' It makes me even more want to buy the standard instead of the slims. Um. But yeah, I mean, it's not bad. I don't think this is like a let's hold slow, slow the roll on Sailor. But it depends on like what the next one is. Like when Pelican did their their price shuffling, they made like three changes up and down in the span of like three to four years. And it just confused people. I don't recall Sailor having a price change since we've been doing this. And like they said, what did they say? It was like the first one in like five years or something. So it's probably time. I mean, I guess it's expected. But I also and I don't know this for a fact, but we're obviously it's a confirmation bias on on our part that we see more Sailor these days just because it seems like they're doing a good job and they're as popular as ever. But I also know that within the past three or four years, they were close to bankruptcy. So it's probably a decision they just had to make at some point, you know, for the long term benefit.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, the price, it's not a 25% would be like a painful jump if 10%. Hmm. That's OK.

'''Myke Hurley:''' It's like if I pay $200 for a pro gear, would I pay $220 for the same pen? Yeah, I would because they're brilliant. So this happens. This stuff will happen, right? Like economics change around the world and sometimes companies have to increase their prices. I think that they're doing a fair amount. They could probably get away with it a little bit more if they wanted to. But it seems like they're being pretty conservative with it.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah. So we'll see what the final result is on the most popular lineups. Hopefully those are more on the 10% and then things like the Rialos are more like the 15%. So yeah, we'll see. We'll see. I also made the note that Pilot could take advantage of this, but I doubt that they will. You know, Pilot's 9-12 lineup is the perfect pro gear competitor and they just could not have less interest in going up against them at all. Like just no concept of that price point in the market as being like kind of a hot area and they're just going to keep doing whatever they're doing, I guess. But I thought like this is kind of the perfect opportunity for that. But whatever.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yep. Yep. It is abnormally large, but somehow just right. And that's what's always confused me about them. So the one pen that I picked up on Sunday that I didn't have a chance to talk about on the podcast was the one pen on my list, which was a Leonardo Memento fountain pen. I chose the Hawaii model for its stunning kind of swirly, stripy acrylic. And I bought this one from the Nibsmith and it comes with a steel nib. I got an extra fine nib. One of the great things about purchasing something from Dan is he will check and tune the nib if necessary. So this thing writes amazingly.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Their steel nibs have a little bit of give in them. So it's a softer, like I would, for my writing style, this extra fine with a little bit of give is perfect. I would not want to go to a fine nib for me. If you like a fine line or if you write small, extra fine is more than enough. Like that's maximum width for me because it's not a hard nail, like a Twisby or something like that. This has a little bit of variance in the line, which makes it look beautiful. I inked it up with Jonathan Brooks Carolina blue. It's kind of the perfect color match. The finish and shape and feel of the pen are perfect. If you are obsessive about your acrylic stripes lining up, you do not want this pen because there's not one section of this pen that jives with the next section of the pen. Like it's got a blind cap.

'''Myke Hurley:''' I'm very pleased you mentioned it because I looked at that pen of yours and I didn't want to say it at the time in case, I don't know, like you just didn't want me to say it, but there's no way I could live with a pen like that. Every part of it was unmatched.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' It was, it drove me bonkers. So I'm taking off the cap, right? And I'm looking at the pen. So there's four distinct sections. There's the grip section. There's the threaded section. There's the pen barrel. And then there's the blind cap because it actually, it's a converter pen, but it's got the little blind cap. So you can unscrew that and twist the converter converter, like a little fake piston mechanism. So those four sections, none of them are, is the word congruent with the next? Like if they flow into that next section, they are all completely mismatched, right? And then you put the cap back on and even the section below the rings on the cap band do not match up with the cap itself. It's all over the damn place, which since it's so mismatched, it works for me. If it was close, like it was almost supposed to be matched, but off, then I would have a problem. So it's completely off kilter all the way around from tip to tail. It does not match at all, but I love it because it goes from bright blue to dark blue and there's some browns and whites in there. It's a really wild material. Now they do make some solid, more solid colors that won't have this type of issue. Um, there's actually an all black, which I wasn't really interested in buying that, but like they have some yellow and some, they have a one group that's kind of more like a celluloid where it doesn't matter if it, you know, matches from piece to piece to piece where it's more consistent throughout the top to bottom of the pen. But yeah, I could see this being a problem for some people, but since this is so mismatched, it's kind of all works together in a weird way. But overall, I'm very happy with the pen. I think I paid $180. Um, I don't even know what the regular price is. I just picked this one up from Dan and asked to purchase it and that's what he charged me. I don't know if I got a discount or that's, that sounds about like regular price to me. So, um, but I did get Dan to, um, you know, check out the nib and it, it writes so good. I'm very, very happy with this pen so far. So just a couple of days into it, but we'll see how it goes, but I'm using it today for show notes. It's great. Um, so that was, I bought that for me to add to the collection to eventually do a review on. So that was, um, that was, that was my pen. The rest of this stuff I bought to either specifically review or to give it away. So pen shows is a great place for me to just load up on review items and give away items. So I bought the full set of the pilot 101st anniversary inks, you know, the little seven mini bottles. So I bought a set of those. I bought the new pilot 74 in burgundy. They did two new translucent colors for that. They did a burgundy and a teal. I don't know if they're, are they calling it burgundy? It might be called wine or something like that, but it's that red color. It's really pretty. Um, I bought a studio note to Moe river notebook. I bought two Lamy crystal fountain pen inks, one, which I have a giveaway going on on the blog right now. One I'm going to keep in review. And aside from that, I guess there were some smaller, I bought several little notebooks. Um, life had some new notebooks that I bought. I bought a caveco perkyo. They have some new colors that came out. They have this red, white, and blue one. That's really sharp looking. I bought that, um, to review. Um, I bought a new notebook from a company called a pun test, which looks very interesting. So I'm going to check that out. So lots of those type of things. Um, one last thing that I purchased, which I forgot to write down till this morning because I didn't actually buy it in the show. I bought it outside of the show, which actually happens a lot when you go, you know, when you have all your friends at a bar and there's like 50 people there who are all into fountain pens and there's all kinds of, you know, testing and trading and sampling going on. I was able to buy a Franklin Kristoff pocket 66 ghost, which is the white barreled that has light translucency in it that Franklin Kristoff does. So I bought a pocket 45 last year from a friend and I love how that barrel looks when it's eyedroppered. So one of my friends, Sandra, who was here earlier and she was here at the show this weekend, she had one for sale and I was like, yes, I will take that please. So that's another cool thing about pen shows. Like if you're there more than the show hours, you get to check out other people's stashes, you know, at night. And sometimes those things are for sale. A lot of people will bring things to sell at like the bar and we were sitting at the bar and we made a deal on the ghost and now it's mine. So that's kind of a kind of a neat thing. Neat little additional bonus that you can have at pen shows that are sometimes not talked about. So that was, I want to say it, but it really wasn't because then you and I and Tiff and Anna and Jeff and Pontus and Julia went shopping on Monday on the way to the airport. So I bought a bunch more stuff from a place called Archer Paper at Ponce City Market in downtown Atlanta, which is a really neat shopping and food space. So I bought a bunch of pencils and paper goods. I did pick up the new extra firm Blackwing pencils, which I had been wanting. So yeah, we did more stationary shopping after the pen show was done. So I ended up with all kinds of stuff. I was maxed out on the return trip home. Like I came with an empty bag and it was full by the time I came home and all my bags were packed to the hilt. So it was a very good show from a stuff perspective.

'''Myke Hurley:''' This year was weird for me. It was, it was very, it just felt very different. It was an overall emotionally, like emotionally draining experience for a bunch of really special reasons, like professionally and personally. So like, it was very different. Part of that for sure was like kind of understanding that it was the fifth time that we'd have done this and just kind of seeing old friends and new friends. It's, it really made it, it kind of like brought to the forefront for me kind of what we're doing here. You know, and there's just like a bunch of stuff where it's like a lot of these things that happen in our community don't match with a lot of the other stuff that I do. So, you know, the outpouring of support and the way that the numbers kind of all shake out. It's like, you know, the amount of people we can get to come to a live show in the town.

'''Myke Hurley:''' The amount of support that we get on Kickstarter, all of that kind of stuff. It's, it's a very different feeling for me. So it was a great show, but I am emotionally spent.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' This is easily the all the feels show. Yes. Of the year for me. I agree. Like it all comes out at this show. For me, it was definitely that way because I don't know. There's so many like friends and family come to the show. Like I mentioned it on the live show. I work less at this show, which is good. As opposed to being like tied to the table. If I'm off, you know, somewhere about myself, I can get around a little easier at this show to see people and talk to people and spend time with people. A lot of times, you know, if I'm not at my table at a different show, it's because I'm running from one place to the other because I need to be back at the table here. I don't have to do that. So just the feel of that is great, right? Like it's a good. This show has the best vibe. I don't know. It's because I mean, and we're super biased, right? Because this is our most special event of the year. It's our vibe. Right. Right. Right. So just seeing all these people and just being able to hang out is just so cool. Like this show is just a blur by the time it's done, not just the podcast, which I hardly remember any of them. We'll talk about that more in a minute. But yeah, I just love this show. Like this show means so much, like in my heart more than anything. Right. Um, there is business to be done. And I do want to make a note of that. It was a slower show than usual this year. Business wise. Business wise. And door receipts wise, like people through the door wise. And we figured out on Sunday that this was the Atlanta area's spring break time. So I think that probably impacted the show. So we called this one. And by the time we were done with Sunday, we had done about three quarters of what we normally do sales wise in Atlanta. And since Atlanta is usually like our number one or number two sales show of the year, three quarters to that, it's pretty darn good. And also it felt less than three quarters busy. It felt less than three quarters busy for sure. And we, so this show is one of the shows that moves on the calendar. Um, being in April in Atlanta, there's a couple of weekends that Jimmy, the show promoter, will not book for this show. One being Masters weekend, which is this coming up weekend. And two being Easter weekend, which is the following weekend. So he moves the show around those two weekends. So this one was earlier than normal. And it just happened to be spring. My kids were on spring break last week. You know, this was kind of like the Georgia spring break time. So I, whether that was the real cause, but I kind of think it at least lines up. At least I'm telling myself that. Right. But, um, it was still good and busy, but it was, we never got run over like we sometimes do on Saturday at this show. Um, so, but overall it was okay. You know, we introduced a new case at knock and new, a new notebook at knock. And, um, you know, we talked about those on the previous episode, but, um, yeah, I just think it was, it was the, the timing. Maybe. Was it, if not, I don't know. The weather was great. It was a good, it was a good time to be in Atlanta. You know, the Braves were in town. A bunch of people picked up some Braves games while they were there. So, um, it was good.

'''Myke Hurley:''' The Inky Side asks, I recently pulled out two bottles of Noodler's ink that are sat unused for a while. Bulletproof Black and Liberty's Elysian. Both have a layer of particles in the bottom of the bottle. What is this? Is it settled dye from saturated ink? Mold? Something else?

'''Brad Dowdy:''' Yeah, it's most likely just pigment. This is not even a Noodler's thing. This isn't any ink thing when you're making an ink. If they sit for a while, the particles inside the bottle can settle a little bit, a little bit of just shake it up and it's going to be fine. It's not mold or anything that's going to cause a problem. This is actually a normal thing for the ink. What's not normal is if you get a layer of crud on the top of the ink layer. Or that's when you're going to have an issue and that's when you're going to consider dumping that ink out. So things settling to the bottom of the ink bottle, good. Things rising to the top of the ink bottle, bad.

You know, I almost felt like a soft celluloid feel based on the pictures, but it was a firmer kind of clicky acrylic. Like if you tapped your fingernails on it, it was that type of feel. '''Myke Hurley:''' I was a little bit disappointed with the nib. It's too small. The pen body is way too big and the nib looks out of proportion. I know it's kind of like maybe on the line a little bit, but the reason I would put it in there, a couple of reasons. One, I own it. I'm picking a bright green, but not a yellow green, like a Mont Blanc Irish green. That's what I see as this. And I say this as not a big green ink fan. Like that's one of the ink colors. Like I'm trying to become more in tune with, you know, like I see bright greens in this pen's future for me. Like if I was in getting it up. So we'll see. It's a really, it's such a pretty pen. So I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll scope around, see what other people are using in, in this pen. So, um, yeah. Next one from Cameron J. I've been using a pilot Kakuna with a fine nib every day for nine months now, and I love it. And I'm looking into possible upgrades. I like the shape, size, shape and size, especially the angular barrel, but could see going with something that weighs a bit more. Do you have any recommendations sub $100? I think it's the TWSBI Eco. Like I feel guilty saying that because I say it all the time. That's that pen is so good. I would buy that pen over the TWSBI 580. I think these days, it's just that good of a pen. It's enough of an upgrade from the Kakuno to be a difference maker. Um, yeah, I mean, it's way under a hundred dollars. It's like, you know, I still, you know, have difficulty in the 70 to $100 range, finding something really, really good. Like you can get the pilot 30, 70, 70, and six with a gold nib. If you shop enough, um, in the upper and, you know, for 80 bucks or something, like if you want to do that, I think that's an option. Otherwise, I think you go with something like the TWSBI Eco. I mean, there's lots of fun pens in this price range, but as far as something better, I, I just love the Eco so much. And, uh, speaking of which we did, I meant to put it in the show notes. They have a translucent orange cap Eco coming, Myke. So that's a, that's a good one. Maybe we'll put that in the show notes for next week. I can't remember which one that uses, uh, is there a model of the Signal DX that uses that refill, but as a click mechanism? I feel like, yes, but I can't find it for sure. Basically Catherine wants a click mechanism for the Signal DX.

'''Brad Dowdy:''' There is not. And that has always been traditionally the issue with people wanting to use that pen. The closest you can get is called the Uniball Signal RT1, which is a fantastic pen in its own right. It comes in a huge range of colors. It comes in all the tip sizes that the DX comes in, but it is not the same writing experience. And that's kind of unfair. It's like comparing an amazingly good pen with a near perfect pen. You know, if the DX is a 10 out of 10, the RT1 is like a 9.5 out of 10, but I can tell the difference when I write with them. It's not exactly the same. It's close enough though, to where you will very, very much enjoy using the RT1, but there is no such thing as a DX retractable pen.

And then the more consistency I see with the H designations on the nib, the more I question myself. So I actually want to do some more research into this. I'm not comfortable committing to anything that they're doing with the nibs right now, other than it doesn't seem to be like there's any type of variance unless you get into the soft designations. The H designations almost seem like stock, but I'm not going to commit to that until I do some more research on it because it feels like the standard nib to me.

And if you're looking for a Pilot G2 compatible pen, your options are pretty wide and varied if you want to go into like a machined Kickstarter type pen. So like the Keras Custom Retract or the Tactile Turn Mover. Those are kind of my first two choices. They're in that $40, $50, $60 range, I think. But shop around anything that fits the Pilot G2, not the Parker G2. There is, don't get confused there, anything that will fit a Pilot G2 gel, the Juice is an exact match for that. And I like what Keras Customs and Tactile Turn do for an upgraded barrel for the Juice.
