The design that would become the Classic Lacquer Tornado first appeared in the 1999 catalog with 7 colors. In 2002 there were 9 colors. When the 2000 and 2001 catalogs come on-line, this information can be updated.

In 2004 they were listed as Classic Rollerball along with 3 colors later called softtouch lacquer.

In 2005 10 colors were listed as Classic Lacquers. This was the first official use of the term Classic Lacquer.

== Changed Colors ==
In 2014, VRR-1318 retained the name Ice Blue but was reformulated to a darker shade. It went from a sky blue to a steel blue.

In 2017, VRR-1307 changed names from Blue to True Blue along with changing the shade of blue. The original Blue leaned a little bit to purple while True Blue lives up to the name.

== New Colors ==

In 2010, two new colors, Purple and Ice Blue, were introduced. They have remained in the catalog since then. In 2011, a White Lacquer model was introduced but only lasted one year.
: There is a lot of BUZZ on this new Rescue Tornado design (pun intended)! Not only is this a unique ballpoint pen your friends will envy you for, but also an important conversation piece on the importance of bees and pollinators. They are disappearing at an alarming rate, This is scary because they are essential to so many crops that cannot survive without the honey bees to pollinate them. With your purchase of this Retro 51 pen, a donation has been made to the NW Honey Bee Habitat Restoration to help preserve and protect honey bee populations. The 730 pens in this model sold out in one day. Some retailers took pre-orders and others just got swamped with orders as the pens arrived. The number 730 was chosen because it is the estimated number of days a mission to Mars will take.

For decades NASA has sent orbiters and rovers to gather intelligence that will help us learn about Mars and the ability to land a manned mission. The latest Tornado Popper, Mission to Mars recognizes the imagination that first started in the pulp comics of the 30s - 40s to the reality it has become less than a century later. This Tornado barrel is printed with graphics reflective of the future rocket that will launch this mission complete with logo top disc and numbered top ring. Pick up one of these collectible rollerballs (numbered edition of 730) because they’re going to blast off in 10…9…8…
The Bic® Cristal® is an iconic pen. Most people in the US and Europe have used this pen at some point.

The inexpensive, disposable Bic® Cristal® (also simply Bic pen or Biro) is reportedly the most widely sold pen in the world.<ref name="Phaidon">''Phaidon Design Classics- Volume 2'', 2006 Phaidon Press Ltd. {{ISBN|0-7148-4399-7}}</ref> It was the Bic company's first product and is still synonymous with the company name. The Bic Cristal is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, acknowledged for its industrial design. Its hexagonal barrel mimics that of a wooden pencil and is transparent, showing the ink level in the reservoir.
== New Colors ==

In 2010, two new colors, Purple and Ice Blue, were introduced. They have remained in the catalog since then. In 2011, a White Lacquer model was introduced but only lasted one year.
The design that would become the Classic Lacquer Tornado did not appear in the 1999 catalog.

== Changed Colors ==

Just a week after launching and selling out the [[Mission To Mars]], Retro 51 released a trio of pens in the new Speakeasy series. The looks are very different with the wine, beer, and absinthe designs.

==Launch Copy==

Get into the creative spirit with the Tornado Speakeasy collection from Retro 51. Each retractable rollerball pen is designed after popular drink bottles and their accompanying labels. Choose from refreshing Beer pilsner, a smooth Red Wine, or the potent Absinthe "la fée verte" (the green fairy). The Beer Tornado has a sculpted twist bottle cap top and full bodied yellow lacquer finish complete with printed cheers label. Red Wine has a robust red barrel with printed label that’s been topped with an actual cork. Finally, Absinthe, the spirit of choice for artists and writers in the early 20th century has a bright green demon printed on the barrel that is completed with antique silver accents. Always remember to write responsibly!

These are NOT limited nor numbered editions!
On November 3, 2017, Retro 51 introduced a pair of new Tornado models with a yoga theme. They both have interesting designs. The more colorful of the two is the Chakra. The [http://www.yogabasics.com/learn/the-seven-chakras|seven chakras] represent the seven energy centers. All seven are represented in the design. A color is associated with each and you will find diagrams of seven poses in seven colors.
